I've been getting mixed opinions on this. Someone please shed some light for me!!! I'm using 10w30 now, I was told by the Honda place I bought the tranny from to only use that. Anything thicker will overheat it and blow it up, is this true? Cause in another post about this someone told me the heat was from using the 10w30 and not 90wt fluid.

if it were me, id just use honda mtf or gm syncromesh.

in my protege i use 10w30 with no problems.

Nope. Go read your owner's manual. It will tell you that 10w30 is what to use if you can't get Honda MTF. Use either that, Honda MTF or GM Synchromesh WITH friction modifier.

I haven't had trouble with mine, but I used Redline Racing Synthetic 10W-40.

I prefer synth 10w30. 90w seems a little thick huh?

Thats what I was thinking too, but I heard so many mixed reviews now my fuckin head is spinning. I'm going to get 2 qts of Honda MTF and be done with this

Do not use synthetic motor oil in the transmission.

Why not synth? I was using the Mobil1 15000 miles stuff at first, it actually lasted the longest.

Not enough "grip" in the transmission is what I usually see. I've never run synthetic in my Honda transmissions, so I couldn't tell you from personal experience. I do know that the owner's manuals and the service manuals explicitly tell you to run normal motor oil, NOT synthetic.

I don't doubt your experience with hondas but you don't want a transmission to "grip" you just want the gears to be able to slide together easy. A transmission doesn't do any gripping, and if it does, I would love to be enlightend. I have an accord service manual that didn't say anything about not using synthetic.

I have been using mobil1 10w30 in my honda since I replaced the tranny. I drive this car very hard with no problems. I think when you say "grip" your referring to an automatic. When you change fluid in those, sometimes you have to add friction modifiers. The clutch takes care of the grip

i dont know where calesta was going with the whole "grip" thing, but i do know that i have read dozens of times not to use synthetic oil in your transmission. I dont know the rationalization for it, but i never do it. Penzoil 10W30 every time.
