I'm going to stick this here as a bit of reference to myself and to others maybe doing a similar build.
Total Cost $800 1989 B16a swaped DX - Red $0 Apexi VAFC2 $600 1991 Auto DX - Gray $1400 - Total $50 Ball joints -Advanced auto $140 Mugen solid rear trailing arm bushing (EF/EG) -shipped $150 Ksport rear LCA - shipped $25 OEM EF9 SiR badge - shipped $130 rear disc conversion - Craigs/local $1895 - Total $162 Password JDM CF powerchamber (EG/EK) - was told by rep it would fit -- $40 Shipped $60 JDM EF9 90-91 clear corner lights -------------------------------------- ^^^--- $30 Password JDM magnetic drain plugs ---------------------------------------^^^--- $2187 - Total Valve cover + gasket set (95 Del sol Vtec) - Honda Dealer $53 Cam seals (95 Del sol Vtec) - Honda Dealer ___________________________________ ___________________________________ ____________ Hello, I have been trolling around for awhile now. I don't post very often., but I just got my hands on a new EF so I figured I'd start a thread. I'll try to keep this thing updated. I don't claim to know alot about cars so I'm sure I'll be messing up alot, but I think I'm capable of this. I'll have more and better pics up later. I picked up the Gray 1991 DX automatic for $600. Body has about 160k on it and there is almost no rust, everything in the car is intact save the painted dash..... The tranmission is ... let's just say broken, but it matters not as this car is just a body. ![]() The Red 1989 DX manual (JDM OBD0 B16a) I picked up for $800. The bad, the seems welds along the bottom are rusted and soft, the interior is gutted with only two GSR leather seats left (torn up too..), the dash is painted (sigh*), it has some kind of $5 fiberglass kit on it, the swap wiring is horrid and unsafe looking, the tranmission is an S1. The good, the B16 is very strong, it has all the manual parts for the 1991, came with a virgin ECU and VAFCII, hassport mounts in excellent shape, thats about all I can think of (worth the money IMO). Oh, and the fog lights on the front are real Stanely OEM CRX with the Honda mounting brackets and wiring intact (don't plan on using). ![]() ![]() Here is a few pics of my garage in Carnegie Pa (5 mins south of Pittsburgh). Daily driver 1992 CB7 EX manual sedan at bottom Gray 1991 DX in background. ![]() Feed back is appreciated. -Korax Last edited by Korax; 08-14-2008 at 02:18 PM. |

What are you going to do with the doner car that came with the B16?
I'd be interested in buying the white front bumper from you if your going to part it out... as long as its in good condition. |

I plan on getting rid of it. The actual Civic bumper on the gray one will be used until I can get my hands on a SiR one, and it actually fits unlike the CRX one, haha. The bumper is in good shape. I'll PM you with some extra pics tonight, or if I can I'll take it all the way off and take pics, Sunday at the latest.

Well, I attempted to tow my 89 up yesterday. The truck I borrowed had a masterlock pin for the receiver. It was rusted and I couldn't get it apart, so we are going to cut it off and do it next Sunday. Started tear down of the gray car but didn't get very far. Ended up doing alot of cleaning up and moving things around in the shop. I haven't had it long and haven't really set it up yet. More pics in the next couple of days.

Here is some random stuff from the last two days.
Couple shots of me taking the bumper off. ![]() ![]() Yay for kitty litter, because I take off lines before draining the fluid. It's just how I roll ;x. ![]() ![]() Running into problems is fun, especially when I do not have a ton of tools up at my garage and stores are closed when they happen ^^/. Evil AC components. (buddy John pictured) I brought up a cutting wheel the next day and just sliced the damn line off. ![]() ![]() Then there are these. Cheap chinese fucking "Tuner" lugs. ![]() Broke on the second wheel. Kid that owned this car had these on way too tight. ![]() ![]() Does anyone know a good way to get this bottom nut off of this intake mani (pictured in the middle)? I don't have a swivel socket so I didn't get to try that. Extensions just don't work thanks the the coolant tube built in right beside it, and open/closed end wrenches can't get any grip. If not I'll just buy a swivel and fuck around with it. ![]() Didn't get as far as I would have liked thanks mainly to those stupid lugs. I only have the passenger side axle out, but I borrowed a tool today to bust those damn things off the other three wheels. Hopefully I can have this D pulled out by this weekend. I'm slow though so we'll see. |

I've always just used 1 6" wobble head extension and 80% of the time, it works every time.
Sometimes you've got to have a swivel. It obviously depends on how much room you have to work with. Did you remove the Intake Manifold bracket? that might help you. |

Yeah, I did remove the bracket. I totally forgot about those extensions. I just can't get the regular ones in there straight enough to get on the nut flat, therefore when I try to turn it it just slips off. I'll pick up one of those and try that. Thanks. And I still haven't got that bumper off at home, I'll do that tonight. I'll just stand on my scale with and with out it so I can figure out the weight ;x.

No problem. I just hate telling people I'm going to do something, then not doing right away or at said time. I'm also over apologetic.
Sorry, haha. |

Ok, I have been busy for awhile so I haven't had much to update. Everything except the D15 and the tranny have been removed.
![]() Last night we decided to head up and try to pull the engine out. I put a jack under the tranny and took off the bolt on the font mount. Next we tried to take the bolt out on the Driver's side mount. My little 3/8" socket wrench and a 3' breaker bar was just popping from the off to on position. So we brought the big guns out. My buddy John pictured. ![]() With that very heated up (bright orange) it still does not budge. I need to pick up a 1/2" 19mm deep dish to use with my 1/2" drive breaker bar. It sucks not having the needed tools. I'll pick one up before my next trip up. Bored, I decided to see how these very cupped Falken Azenis (205/50/15s) fit on. They were just laying around from the guy I rent with. He used to run them on his Intgera I think. ![]() ![]() With stock suspension and the wheels turned all the way out I can barely get my hand behind the tire and the inner wheel well. I'm sure during any kind of normal driving they would rub like crazy. I see now why 195/50/15 is the biggest they really put on with out spacers. Again, bored, I decided to pull my very bent sway bar off of my CB7. The first time I ever hit something was just over a month ago. I backed over a 8"x8"x16' log that was laying in my friends yard. It was directly behind my car at night. I totally missed seeing it, ;/. the picture speaks for itself damage wise. ![]() I ordered a new 24mm solid Progress bar from Import Performance Parts almost 6 weeks ago, $161 shipped. I still have not received it. They will be getting a call today. Well I hope to get back on track this week and get this D out and get the B up there and out/in. Any advice is welcome. |

I did get the engine removed. Now if only I could get my Red one in there. ![]() I have ordered a bunch of stuff. I'll try to get pics as I get the stuff. My goal, till I get the Red 89 up there, is to press in some new ball joins, clean up the engine bay, and get some tools for wiring. Mugen Rear tailing arm bushings for the destroyed ones on the rear disc conversion i have.. ![]() ![]() Ksport rear LCAs ![]() I ordered some valve cover/cam seals for a 95 del sol Vtec today. As well as having Adavanced deliver me some front lower ball joints. I helps to be the internet sales manager at a Honda/Toyota store. I also am going to try to bid on a Dremel set here in an hour or so. I really want to get this project rolling and driving before winter hits. It will be garaged for the duration of. |

I haven't updated in a few. I have the Red hatch at the garage now. I have decided I'm taking everything off of the body and then cutting it into a few pieces so we can easily take it to the scrap yard. It has really bad rot along the seams.
The beasts trip to the garage ![]() ![]() "Some" Rot The other side is worse but I could not get a decent shot on that side. ![]() And a few tear down shots. ![]() ![]() Do any of you know what this Knuckle came off of? I know it is common to do EX/Si or DA knuckle/brakes. Top is the random one from the already swapped car. bottom is the stock DX. The swapped knuckle has a 10" 1/8 rotor (might not be the right measurement I forget exactly what it was. DX caliper ![]() Anyway That's all I have for now. I have been busy so progress is slow ;/. |

What exactly are you asking? I don't know of any good ways to determine what kind of knuckle you have, but if the car drives straight you don't need to worry about it. Especially when you already have the "big brake" upgrade! Are you planning on swapping this susp. setup onto the grey civic? |

Well, I had planned to do the NSX/Legend front upgrade in a few months. I need to swap the tranny in my Accord before winter hits (bad diff or throw out bearing, as well as bad syncro[sp?] rings). I already have it and a new exedy clutch for it. So, I was just going to swap into the gray one and drive it for maybe a month on the stock DX brakes. Then it is going to be parked for the winter to get the minor body work done, rear discs, suspension, and possibly a cage depending on my income. So, no I guess I hadn't planned on it. Unless I NEED to do it then I will. And that was exactly what I was asking, if there was a way to tell. I notice that most parts are stamped with "SH3" for the hatchback. I wasn't sure if maybe there was somthing like this to indicate what they are. Though, now that I think about it, can I use the stock DX hubs with my axels?... I'm assuming they are DA. I know the transmission is a S1 from the LS. Yay for the worst tranny possible.
Edit: Eh, maybe those brakes will be enough for now. Tell me what I should do ;x. Last edited by Korax; 09-03-2008 at 09:38 AM. |
