Do you have the king pin or ball joint front end? They make drop spindles for the ball joint. Go with an aftermarket disc setup, then you can do a wide 5 conversion too.

Seems to be the case in most places. My brother is a HUGE VW enthusiast, and he had a hard time finding a decent shell when he was doing his project. He ended up getting one that was in decent shape, and it cost an arm and a leg--before the motor work.
