Dashboard reconstruction

Posted 01-22-2008 at 10:36 PM by Aleaf.CRX
I also wanted to maybe sand-blast my dash to get the smooth texture then maybe use fiber glass to build a mold over the original and use both to shape it how I want it. But, does anyone know if I could maybe just build a fierglass version off of the old one and use that? Comments, suggestions...? I don't know much about cars (well, probably more than some girls my age), but I'd love to learn!!!!

Hey Aleaf. You can build anything out of fiberglass you want really. If you dont like the rex dash you could try the dash out of a DA integra. well, thats what i'm doing now.
And you said you want to learn more; where are you from? I'm in Indianapolis

My friend actually does this kind of work. he has my CRX dash and is working on it now.

His work is found in the Mazda Speed forums. It's slow, but he does it in his basement.

I'm gonna take my old beat up armrest and experiment on it this weekend so I'll let you know how it turns out. I would think with the plastic bits you could sand them down a little, hit them with some of that filler primer and then smooth it down. Wet sand it with say some 320 or something.

Its the foam cover crap that I wonder about. Like the stuff on the door panels and the dash. I would think if you glassed right over it you would end up with a flexible surface underneath. My gut tells me this is bad. I'm thinking of stripping one down to plastic and then building it back with fiberglass and smoothing it over. Its not too hard to replace a door panel if I fuck it up majorly...
