Roads - a repost, and two blogs in one.

A while ago I posted up this video. This video was just spellbinding - especially for those of us that ride on two wheels.

I can tell you all that riding a motorcycle is something that just has to be "felt". When I decided to give it a try, I was met with all sorts of resistance, from concerned family and friends (My mom actually cried to me.. and STILL DOES). I was told by several people (Thanks Clayton) that I would be dead in months.

I want to thank you all for your support.

But this month as I roll over 7000 combined miles on 3 different bikes, I'm glad to report that I'm still alive. I dropped my big bike twice, which kinda shook my confidence, but I got over it because there is something absolutely magical about riding a bike.

Lots of people try to describe it, they use corny shit like "wind in your hair" and "you feel part of the world". While this may accurately describe where they come from, and what they experience, I can tell you that the experience is different for everyone.

I know a lot of people who have gotten on the saddle rode around, said "Yeah, that was nice" and then got off and went back to caging around. That mystifies me. I can't figure that out.

Well, maybe I can. I think I can quantify it because of all the people that have come to me recently, or gone to others recently, talking about getting on a bike. And they all seem to fall into two categories:

"I really want to do this. I dream about doing it. But I'm afraid to do it"

And there is "All my friends are doing it, and I want to spend more of this fun that my friends are having, with my friends"

EACH of these reasons are valid reasons to get on two wheels.

On Fear: Lots of people are actively trying to scare people into a car. But life is a scary place. One thing you need to remember is that people die in Volvos too. It happens. A bike gives you 75% less frontal area, making a direct hit from the front that much less. (Yeah yeah, I know.. I'm full of shit.. but bear with me here for a sec. I'm talking about math and counterargument). The world is a scary place, and often the activities that are the scariest (Skydiving, for instance) are some of the safest activities out there. As one Base-jumper said in an interview about Risk: "I'm not worried about the jump. I'm worried about dying in traffic on my way to the jump. Driving is WAY more dangerous than jumping off buildings with a parachute"

On group riding: Group riding changes people. It makes a friend who was going to be a "passenger" into a friend who is now your "Wingman". There is a HUGE difference. In a car you can have a conversation with your friend, you can listen to music and comment on the world around you. On a bike, you can do all of this too, but only when you stop. Until that time, your friend is now "your wingman". And you're more than friends, you're teammates. It's incredible, and almost indescribable.

But here is the problem with riding in this mindset: It's missing the all-important factor. The reason you should get on a bike in the first place:

"I want to!"

Getting a bike and riding should be founded in your own self. Not in what others think.

Now, here is a little bit from a bike blog that I posted up before . You'll enjoy bike blogs, and I'm working on the gear right now so I can start making my own bike blogs. This one is great, because it doesn't need words.

Enjoy.
