Rez the Teg Part 2 - In the begining...

Posted 03-29-2008 at 01:03 PM by drbelanger73
It is hard for me to understand why this car was in such ill repair. When I was 17 I had an old rusted out 77 monte carlo that barely made 90mph. Still I vacummed it, washed it and generally took pride in my new car. This Integra is a prime example of why you don't give things to kids. If they want to earn it and then treat it like shit that is their buisness. I had to buy all my cars and as a result I treated them a lot better.

Enough parental lecturing though...

Here are some photos that I hope will give a good baseline for the vehical. It was rather difficult to decide on only five as there was so much rampant abuse to be photographed.

Picture number one I like a lot. This is the gas cover placed on the (poorly) spray painted hood. I stopped mid sanding as I thought it would make a good photo. The car had been sprayed red once and then yellow right over it. Nothing was spared, not the glass, not the moldings, not the headlights, (trails off in disgust). See for yourself.

Second is the tire. From what I understand they lowered it somehow (cut springs, aftermarket springs I don't know). After that they would sit in the back and the extra weight would rub the fram down onto the wheels. Also from what I understood they kept the tires with the wire coming through because they liked the sparks they made.

Next is the corn chip, gummie worm, french fry mess I found under the seats. I had photos of the pizza menu, smashed cheese on the trunk carpet, as well as the pile of detrius that had accumulated in the trunk. Somehow he had wired up a video screen and played movies in the car. All of that was ruined as well when I got it and I had to tear out all the amateur hook ups that had been clobbered together. After I replaced the majority of the fuses though, the electrical system was luckily in good shape.

Next we have the sheet rock screw holding the bumper lense on. I found these things everywhere. At last cound I had pulled out over 25 and just stopped counting.

Lastly after great debate I elected to add a photo of the car as it sat when I aquired it. It had been sitting in the driveway for a month or two with (amazingly) a couple flat tires.

The son of a co worker had worked on the engine and I knew that part was in good shape. Compression and leak down tests were passed with flying colors, I can't remember the specifics atm.

I will close with this. Never be overly exhuberant in aquireing a project car. My full intention was to gut this thing and start over from the frame up. I could have picked a better baseline. Still the price was low and the canvas was clear.

Next up: A few words about parts, ebay, and the aftermarket game.

Cars mean different things to different people.

And that's a fucking tire ?! It looks like a struck match !

Remember that we are in a hobby that not a lot of people "get". And ontop of that, Pride in our hobby is something that even FEWER get. Most of the people, most of the people even on this forum (Now we're getting REALLY granular) would never pay respect to your car because "it's so old". Still more people would never consider owning something older than 1995.

And let them. Fuck em if they can't take a joke. They don't "get it". You will be happier being around people that "get it" anyway.

Use your car as litmus paper. Locash (From LONG LONG ago) had a date where the girl he was with, in his CRX, said during their first date: "You and I have so much in common, we both drive piece of shit cars!" He pulled over, and told her to walk.

Tell people to walk. Do your thing. If restoring this is going to make you happy, then do. But don't expect anyone to understand or "get it".

Ultimately the only one who need understand is my wife, who graciously allows me to continue to spend money on my eccentricites.

Beyond that it is the artisan experiance that drives me. It is an artistic venture as much as a performance thing. I know every bit of this car, every twist of the metal, every contour and imperfection. When it is done it will be mine, an extention of my mind in metal.

You either get it or you don't, but in the end, its really all for my own satisfaction.

The blog is intended as a snapshot of the process and a guidepost for a like minded project.

It doesn't surprise me at all that something this hideous could become of an automobile. Granted I didn't take perfect care of my crx, but I washed it weekly, vacuumed out the inside and kept it presentable at least. It is as you say, when handed everything in life why should you care about something that mom and dad could easily replace
