Camshaft timing

Posted 10-19-2008 at 08:56 PM by D15Beater
Crankshaft timing isnt that big a deal, yes ive had my ass whipped by a 88 Nissan 200SX a few years ago but its simple on hondas.
Set your crankshaft to TDC(top dead center) be the lonely mark on the balancer.
Now move on to the camtiming up top. Set the cam marks @ 9&3 oclock on the gear parallel where the head meets the valve cover. The D15 gear has marks on the front and the back of the gear, theyre easy to see. Put the belt on. Recheck your marks, turn the engine over 3 times, then on the 3rd rotation go past TDC just enough tension stays on the belt, hold the crank with one hand and tighten the tensioner bolt with the other.

vvvvv Applies only if you have a adjustable cam gear vvvvv
If your not sure about the cam gear being rite or you have a adjustable gear and the marks are different than the stock gear. All you have to do is loosen the bolt that holds the cam gear on before doing any of the above steps. Follow the steps above, but before you tighten the tensioner pull the cam gear bolt you loosened at first all the way out so you can see the key way in the camshaft. It should be vertically parellel
in relation with the engine. When you get the key way up where it should be and the crankshaft is rite, tighten your cam gear bolts down, tighten the tensioner and reinstall your cam gear bolt. Then check by turning the crankshaft over like I said above.
Make a note where your marks on the adjustable gear are at now and remark TDC on the gear.
Hope this helps someone, Ive seen alot of cam timing issues on the web here lately.
