$5 for a pack of sand paper in various grit levels. $5 a can of color. $5 for a can of clear if necessary. Unless you want something elaborate just do it yourself. If you do, it all depends on how elaborate you get.

I really want a nice job. With good paint not a 5$ can of spray. And i have axcess to a sand blaster...... I might just sand blast it down to bare metal and have a pro shoot a few coats. I was thinking maybe white but that will be hard to keep clean

def get it sandblasted..
i just did a cover yesterday..
i did an anodized color..so i paid $6 for a small can of chrome..$10 for a normal sized can of anodized red..had i done primer it would have cost $10..and then the clear is $10

i opted to not use the clear because for some reason everytime i use it it fogs up..
you can do the cover yourself..

well, lets put it this way.. i flushed the inside out at least 50 times w/ water.. each time a little more sand came out.. its not something i would risk seeing that you'll be putting it on top of your motor.. 1 grain of sand can do a lot of damage

.. $50 is expensive i think... a place here charges $25/ wheel to powdercoat.. i'm sure a VC would be cheaper

Duplicolor auto paint is pretty quality stuff. But yea, I'd go powdercoating. A place I know in Columbus only charged me $25 to strip my intake manifold for the camaro and then powdercoated it chrome for the top and cleared the base. Theres a whole lot of colors out now. A lot of good metalics are making there way in the line-up at quality places.

I did this...

...with just paint stripper, sand paper, and spray paint. And that's the first one I ever did. Its really not that hard to paint it yourself. If you're not mentally retarded or a cripple, then I'd say give it a go.

If you decide to have someone else do it though, I agree with what everyone else said. $50 is too much, and get it powdercoated...

Just remember, A lot of these paints are not made to stand up to high heat.
if your going spray can direction, opt for high heat primer and paint (you dont really need clear). You will be limited on color choices though.

As far as Auto based paint, i would stay away form it, it may last a year, but with the heat, it wont last much longer, it breaks down lacquer and urethane pretty quick. it will look like the b18(da) or d15(ef or eg) valve covers now from back in the day.

powdercoating is the way to go. it will stand up to the heat off the motor and a little more abuse under the hood.

I also used the VHT Wrinkle Plus paint on mine, I'm giggle happy with it.

Powder coating is 100x better than any paint, but I don't have a powder coater in the area. So I would have had to ship it off and have it done and ship it back, blah blah.. Not keeping this motor very long, so I tried the vht. Good stuff so far.

And I sand blasted mine, but had taped off the baffles. Still got some sand in there, had to flush it eleventy billion times with warm soapy water.
