Any CEL's? When does it make these burps and back fires? At idle?

Give as much info as possible and make sure to add something tomorrow (reply) when more
people are on the site and it can be put to the top of the new posts

you need to double check your crank and camshaft timing.
how is the fuel mileage?
maybe your injectors are leaky

are you sure that the spark plug wires are in the correct locations on the distributor cap? - the DOHC ZC is not the same as SOHC

SOHC:
3 4
1 2

DOHC:
1 3
2 4

like this:

what distributor are you running? Have you moved the cam position sensor at all? I had a problem like that about a year ago and it was an electrical problem with a splice under the intake manifold. If I can remember more details i will post again later.
