The D16Z6 running on OBD1 electronics will be your best bet for fuel economy and power. The DOHC ZC won't fare as well, and will be harder to get replacement parts for as everyone has mentioned already. The non-OBD electronics also don't manage the engine as tightly, so your mileage won't be as good as it could be.

Good point about the differances in OBD mileage..I didn't think about that.

darn.... I didn't think about that.
the thing that made me decide for the CZ is because is seems to be a simple swap with no extra costs. also, if I decide to build for performance and have some fun, the ZC has lots of potential. I could get a SI transmission and have a nice fun car.
I will be searching for the OBD1 conversion to see if I want that.

I still have time to decide. I will doing it maybe in 2 weeks. I thought it would be the easiest swap, and I found one locally, but I have no rush. I want to explore all my options.

Dude.....ONE MORE TIME... the D16Z6 is going to be easier and has more after market support. Not to mention, its a proven platfrom. First off, and don't take offense to this but, you have to make your mind up! First you said you wanted the easiest swap with the best gas mileage, now you say you may build it in the future, which will more than likely through gas mileage out the window. Once you choose, you should decide which motor you need. If you go z6. You can go from a DD thats easy on petro, all the way to a 350-400HP monster and every where in between. Use your brain on this one.

thanks man... thats why I posted here, so I could get peoples' opinion and help me makeup my mind. I'm new to Hondas and that's why I'm a little apprehensive I guarantee you I take no offense. I'll be looking into it and read a little more. The problem is I did a search and I found nothing solid about the swap.

You definitly won't find anything solid on the swap becuase it is so straight forward. All you need is the d16z6, p28 ECU ( I think ), maybe part of the engine harness, and to wire for vtec. A re-re could do it in one afternoon. Im just given you hell becuase when you ask us for help, we've got to know which choice your gonna make so we can point you in the right direction. Good luck though on which ever choice you make.

I like the idea for a 5th gen dx engine, d15b7. I had one in my car temporarily, and I got it as a complete swap for 100 bucks. The thing only had 100k on it, got me like 45 mpg, and I bet it would be a big jump over a dpfi hf...

yeah, they are a dime a dozen, because no one really wants one for a 5th gen civic. I think it would be a cheap upgrade for your car. And if you decide you want more power, you can always swap on a z6 head.

And you don't have to worry about wiring for vtec until you go to upgrade to the z6 head......

I have swapped out three transmissions into my CRX to see what the gas mileage would do - I was looking mainly for gas mileage. Here is what I found:

SI tranny - average 35-42mpg - 6K fall
HF tranny - average 37-40mpg - 2k winter

RPM@ 65 3,000 both Auto and SI
2,000 with HF

Please note that HF tranny was put in winter so I expect it to improve a lot in summer.

Also note that I have 16 valve motor (DX) that torque peeks @ 3,500 or 4,500 this I think is not an optimized combination. I will be installing a HF head and MPFI soon that has peek torque @ around 2,500 rpm. I think this will also help considerably. So far my thinking has not proven out but facts are facts.

So far the figures do not show high mpg gaiins with the tall transmission - again winter with below zero temps.

I do about 50/50 city and highway driving.

FYI,

Bryan

So far I have not seen the

why not something like the d16a6 ....

i had one before i got my z6.

It has some get up, good gas mileage, after market support and its cheap.

really if your just looking for more umph and not looking to tear off a line that might be a good choice ...

well guys I got a really nice DOHC ZC almost too good of an engine for this car. got the engine Monday and it's already in the car. Tomorrow I'll get the radiator, some vacuum lines, fluids, and fire up that baby. lets see how it goes. I was told that since the ZC has lots of torque and you don't have to step on it to move, I wouldn't loose too much gas millage with the HF tranny.
now I might need a SIR hood because this HF came with a carbon-fiber hood OEM style. Its going to look rice if I use washers to raise it up.

You're having clearance issues?? Never heard anything about that motor not fitting good in a Rex before. Owell, Put the washers under the hood hinges (the part of the hinge that connects to the car, not the hood) It will give you space to solve any clearance issues and it will look JDM-ish. i think PASSWORDJDM.com sells a set of extended hinges but they are pricey.

From what I heard, the only thing you do to the stock hood to fit the engine, is to cut some of the braces out. this engine it is larger than the regular USDM ones. Remember that the JDM SIR hoods are different.

It seems strange for you to have issues with it hitting the hood. My b16 doesnt hit and the hood is stock with nothing cut out.

seems strange, but the ZC is like that. if you look close all the JDM ZC cars have a bulge on the driver's side.

2-shea maykel, I inspected a few pics of the ZC and it does look akwardly tall, like the pitch of the valves in the ZC are steeper and the cams are closer together, which probally makes the head taller then say...a B-series.
