I am new to the tuner concepct and I am looking to beef up my 1990 Honda CRX HF but I am at a lost. it has the d15b6 engine in it. I am planning on later doing a body and suspension mod but I am at a lost as for the motor. I don't know if I should just keep the motor in it or swap. I do know that what ever I do I will want to keep the working AC and PS. Any ideas will be helpful.

true because ive saw 400+whp sohc motors....but for the ts the least amount of money and ease to swap will be a b series motor. all you will have to do is run a wire for vtec on some motors. but its a very easy sawp to do.

MiniMe swap and ECU, LS Rods Vitara slugs, and a Transmission that doesn't suck= $800+ D16Z6 engine and a cable SI trans = 400-800 and there's alot less work if you just do the whole thing, I learned this lesson the hard way, Lol..

if you are new to tuning the last thing you want to do is complicate your life with an engine transplant... unless you happen to be a mechanic that is new to what some call the 'import' or 'tuner' scene. i don't know you personally but the impression is... you need to learn a few things before you start transplanting.
i once had a book that was about tuning your honda. the MOST IMPORTANT thing about this book is that it detailed this author's opinion of the proper steps for tuning your honda. the book started with basic air filter and exhaust modifications and gave direction for general tuning. although you managed to purchase the lowest hp motor, i have seen from europe that you can get a lot of relative hp/weight power from small displacement. keep in mind that mini coopers (the originals) are 1.3l. keep in mind you want to have fun driving this car. save some energy for suspension and maybe some gentle 15" wheels. point being, keep it simple, and as always, this is only my opinion and i hope it helps... ![]() -edit- for future reference your car should not and probably does not have power steering so no needs to worry about that. and it is in good taste to not add a body kit to the crx... take some crx si parts and 15 or 16" wheels, slightly lowered and it looks like a different car. just my opinion. as for the other 1.5l article that is similar... i say again. start with making modifications that are interchangeable with other transplants. and although an 8 valve head is not ideal, it is still capable of more power than stock.
-intake -exhaust (maybe even header) -suspension and 15' civic si wheels... make the car fun to drive!! |

I'd strongly suggest doing the MPFI Swap at very least.

i agree with everyone here...
if you want to get your car to breathe right. do the MPFI conversion, go with the 99-00 EX intake manifold (d16y8) and same exhaust manifold (unless header), those are some of the cheapest, and best working (best bang for buck)... those are know as the OEM type R parts

HF's were MPFI already. DX and STD were DPFI. In the end it all turns out to be your budget and ability that will limit you. D would probably be the most cost effective.

Two choices
DOHZ ZC D16Z6 turbo whichever you choose and kick as all day. D16Z6 needs some minor wiring mods, ZC is plug and play (well minus the dizzy connector but if it comes with a harness you are good to go). And you can use your stock mounts and tranny. Yay....... cake!

Just because I an new to tuners does not mean i am new to custom vehicals. I have had many modified lowriders with more engine then needed. I just am new to imports. It shouldn't be assumed that if someone asks questions and is honest about not knowing everything about engines, that this would be someone's first car. The pride of my toys is a 1996 S10 with a blown 454 tubed, dropped, and setup for spray.
Now that that has been said... I like the ZC idea but I wonder, is it DOHC? and what did it come out in ( from factory )? |

on another note my hf already has a K&N Airfilter and a set of 17 in Racing Wheels. but it is not enough I have already been looking at a baffeled tip muffler for it and or a cat black exuast system.

ambitious...but rubbish
|
see if you can trade those 17's for some 14 or 15's and I didn't notice any one suggesting a tranny swap, but an Si tranny will make it feel quicker.
rear disk brakes help alot too, and easier to work on. |

I already have an SI Tranny in it. The factory tranny went out and it was the only replacement I could get, lucky me. and I am currently trying to get this other CRX Si that has title issues for parts, but I would like to know what car did the DOHC ZC engine come out factory in, and what liter is it? It would make it easier for me to find one if I knew.

theres a DOHC ZC
pretty much all D series your going to find are 1.5 or 1.6, and the occasional 1.7 single cam. pre 90 integra's had the DOHC and I don't remember what was all involved in the swap. You can always swap the head off of your for a SOHC Vtec head, or a DOHC if you can find the right one. Just getting a longblock should be less time consuming though. Also, how does your HF have power steering?
