I have a 93 Civic si hatch.

Over the weekend, someone broke into my car. They didn't steal anything, but they broke my steering wheel off for some reason. I'm trying to find out what I need to get replaced.

There is a metal rod that connects between the base of the steering wheel and where the steering wheel attaches to the dash. It looks like it's grooved. It appears to be the main point of contact between the steering wheel and the rest of the steering system. Basically you have to rotate that metal rod in order to steer the car. They broke that off and the end is stuck inside the steering wheel.

What is that part called and what would I have to replace to fix it? Do I have to replace the entire steering column?

I'm assuming that it wouldn't be safe to dig that bit out and somehow weld it back on to the rest of the rod.

Thanks in advance.

Holy crap, The Hulk broke into your car :p

Thats crazy man, I'm not 100% sure but I think you need to replace the whole column....

I cant take pictures of the actual damage, but this is the part that they broke:

yep, that'll need to be replaced most likely.. might as well toss a integra steering column in there.. it has a quicker turning radius

agreed, that whole column will need to be replaced, and I would get the integra one too, tilt and leather wheel if you get the whole thing, they aren't hard to replace, just unbolt the 4 bolts that hold it to the under dash thing, and then 2 more a little lower, then another bolt way down on the bottom that attaches to the coupler, 2 or 3 plugs and you're in business, I have done it more than once.

I would be apt to wonder why they broke off the steering wheel, maybe they were going to steal the car??, although they were going at it the wrong way. . . unless they were trying to break the steering lock and managed to shear the shaft right off. . . nothing else was tampered with?? They didn't take apart the plastic surround that goes on the other side of where you put the key in??

If I were you I would get a good alarm, people will be less likely to mess with your stuff.
