i have a 1994 honda civic with a d16z6 (sohc vtec)
5spd figured theres no better place but here to ask all the gearheads if i should just build the engine with brand new aftermarket performance parts or just forget about it and save for a swap, i mean if you guys can show me that the d16z6 has really good potential then ill keep it, if not i guess ill save for a swap, well let the comments begin! __________________

A b-series swap would probably be better for you. Cost to pull an engine/trans., tear it down, rebuild with aftermarket parts, put it all back together and re-install in the car. Not to mention a new clutch/flywheel, fuel system and engine management. Dollar for dollar the swap is a better choice for you at this time.

The stock D-series cranks can hold up to 400+whp... but unfortunately the rods do not.

well the only modification i have done to the engine is an aem intake, and some aftermarket headers so those two things are out of the way for now...., ive come up with a budget of around $2500 for now just to move things along..you know....anyone have suggestions on good trusted websites you normally buy your honda parts from? im currently looking around but if anyone has a good one ill gladly take a look
, thanks again guys__________________

If you plan on running 250 horses or close to I would suggest replacing the rods and going with eagle rods. Like everyone stated d-series rods do hold up to 250 horses on a good tune however if you ever decide 250 isn't enough anymore you can run far more with the eagle rods. its worth the money. Also get some viatara pistons with those rods and you are probably safe up til about 400 hp should you ever decide to go that high. Taking into account future mods and doing some premaintence like a new head gasket, the rods, pistons, and head studs will always help save money in the long run. Even if you don't run over 250 the eagle rods will last longer than d-series rods, head studs hold up better to boost than stock head bolts, and a new head gasket is something that any motor should get over like 60,000 miles.

The weakness in the D-series rods are actually the bolts; those usually cause the bearings to spin, thus throwing the rod. There are cheap and reliable rod options for the D16Z6; mainly Eagle, TunerToy, and FJT's custom rods.
FJT has a "engine kit" for D16s(IIRC includes bearings, seals, Vitara pistons, and probably some other stuff). for about $320 shipped. Add roughly $300(there's like an introductory price right now that's less though) for forged rods. __________________
