to load vista i have a 4GB USB thumbdrive. made it bootable and had it install from there. i went with the 160gb model and swapped in a faster drive. only idiots get the SSD. cmon seriously lol

share out the CDROM on the desktop, and connect to it via a share. \\computername in the runbox and if you do it right the share will pop up.

now the 1000he or eh is on the top of my list, going to check it out in person.

The SSD drives are great when it comes to weight and sound. for basis use its nice. I wouldn't mind a 32gb SSD computer, but they all seem to be 8 and 16.....

Gotta keep in mind these little things are meant to be used for..... internet
not mp3 storage, movie storage and porn....

not to say I wouldn't.....

i'm going to use mine mostly as a work machine. chances are when a faster atom comes out im going to swap that in too.

SSD is also great for speed. SSD is also great if you want to spend $250+ for 64GB, or $700+ for 256GB.

What about power consumption? My understanding was that the SSD's use a lot less juice than a spinning hard disk. I love the fact that when mine is running it has zero moving parts.
And SSD's cost about half of what you quoted. Prices are gonna drop like a rock once they become the new standard (which they will for portable devices).
How long does your battery last with the hard disk?

they do consume less power, and interesting i was quoting ebay...

in XP i had about 4 hours of battery life on full power (anything less is well... i dont like to wait)

with Vista i get about 5.5 hours.

Newegg.com - Patriot Lite PL64GPEPCSSDR 64GB Mini PCIe Internal Solid state disk (SSD) - Solid State Disks

$138 for a 64GB SSD

I think I get about 6-6.5 hours out of a full charge. Seems worth it to me. I dunno, I think I like the idea of no moving parts more than anything. If they wanted to, they could print the whole computer onto a single circuitboard.

the unit I'm looking at comes with a standard harddrive 160gb and has a power rating of 9.5 hours. Real test have shown closer to 7hours to be a true # for people who really USE it.

for some reason my dad sent me some money and told me to get an external hd, so i went and picked up a Western Digital 320gb Passport Essential. got it for $89. i coulda got a 500gb one for the same price but it required external power where as the Passport 320gb one doesnt. it was a tough call but thats the reason why i got the 320gb one.

Problem with external harddrives is IMO it defeats the point of having a mini computer, you can't just plop it into your jacket pocket and go. If you have a small harddrive, the way to go would be to setup a hosting site and FTP all your files to/from the computer.

Hosting sites are less secure than just having the harddrive with you, IMO. I don't see how it defeats the purpose. My External HD is just as portable as my netbook.

I have a 120gig WD Passport that I toss in my laptop bag when I have my Acer out on the town. I have a couple movies and quite a few pictures and the only time it comes out is if I am showing someone some pictures or I am traveling. Then again I have the 160gig HD in my Aspire One. These things are not deffinatly not good for a primary rig. When my old laptop died I couldnt justify spending 700 or 800 bucks to just surf the web so I got a netbook. I have a slightly built desktop for anything heavier than managing my Zune (podcasts and such) or surfing.

All the memory chips are made in the same factory in china. The brand name is just the people who solder them to a board. This may make a difference on things like MoBo's and Graphics Cards, but for SSD's and RAM sticks, you're just paying more for expensive solder.

Now if you plug a monitor into it, you'll have a full blown desktop.

I actually considered making a docking cradle setup for mine, The USB, Power, and SVGA out are all on the same side...

So did you buy a netbook or a replacement computer?

+ 1 on buying a monitor, might as well go all the way.

i bought the netbook as sort of a replacement computer. i dont do any gaming, graphic making or any of that other stuff on it. i have a shitty old desktop for that. ive got a monitor cable for it that i can hook my netbook up to my tv. i just really dont need it.

Brian, as opposed to me, won't hardly take his netbook with him anywhere. So having all that stuff plugged into it will work for him.

B, use your damn netbook keyboard. You'll get used to it really quick.
