1. delete all the useless shit in the tray
2. open run menu and type msconfig and then go to the startup tab and uncheck anything that looks unfamiliar or that you don't want to run when you boot up
3. go to add/remove programs in the control panel and delete any useless shit that you dont need anymore or dont use
4. download some free spyware program (i suggest ad-aware) and run it
5. defrag your hdd (start > all programs > accessories > system tools > diskeeper disk defragmenter)
6. reboot.

you don't want a lot of icons sitting in the "tray," the small box next to the clock in the lower right screen... they just eat up your memory and for the most part are useless. try to right click each icon and see if there is an exit or quit option and try to remove as many as possible

you probably have some spyware thats eating your memory... try those 6 things and if that doesn't work you probably have to reformat

you could try disk cleanup which should clear all caches as well. as for ram, 256MB is barely enough to scrape by these days.

xubuntu... from the specs on that thing, i doubt you do much more than surf the net and other simple things, right?
http://xubuntu.org/

other than that, you could always pick up a copy of one of those "lite" versions of XP. I always see them on Demonoid. that may be an option if you want to stick w/ windows.

reformat that biatch and it should be good. 256mb of ram is fine to run XP for what you're doing, but barely.
