Default HD-DVD or Blue-ray which would you buy?

This was done probably a year ago and I want to see what has changed. I got my hi def tv not to long ago and am looking to see what most of you would get for a player. My Time Warner hi-def dvr is the only thing I have that can take advantage of it.

I am not getting the dual format, $1100 is to much for the dvd player. It seems that the hd dvd has more support, but for the most part the blue-ray is better. Kinda the beta vs. vhs.

Well, when I stroll down to my local hastings, I see a Blu-ray section. What I dont see is a HD-DVD section.

God, I wish I'd have invested in Blu-Ray. I almost did it, $1000 in whatever company was producing blu-ray back when it was an embrio. But I backed out for some stupid reason.

It still hasnt gone huge, so it would probably still be a good buy.

Until there is a CLEAR victor, neither. But I do hate Sony, so it'd be nice to see them have another format fail.

This is like asking what stock to buy....

I think forum after forum (Im on a lot of forums!) believe HDDVD is the way to go, I've also noticed forum after forum that everyone seems to be a xbox 360 fan boy go figure.

My take on it.

When a new DVD ad comes on tv, almost always I hear out on out DVD or out on DVD and Blu Ray. RARELY do I hear out on HDDVD and DVD.

It seems that sony is pushing for more movie releases on blu ray.

There's loose talk about Walmart backing HDDVD and not supporting (selling) bluray videos. I find that hard to believe but it was published in a few legit places.
in the end I think walmart would want to sell anything and everything if it means making another 2c

If I had to pick one I'd say Blu Ray it's a higher end product, it cost a bit more to make but sells for about the same as the HDDVD just check out Amazon.com: Online Shopping for Electronics, Apparel, Computers, Books, DVDs & more for blu ray disc.

While I'd pick blu ray over HDDVD I'd never put any money on it!
only time will tell.

I work for Circuit City and from what i hear HD is gonna take it and the only reason polls and critics alike say its gonna win is because the porn industry chose HD and beleive that was the deciding factor

people say that, but when it comes down to it, what was the 90s porn DVD/VHS #s vs the 2000s porn #s gonna be like?

I for one will never buy another DVD/VHS. Why? because I have highspeed internet and can easily download HD porn.

80s and 90s you had to buy a video tape/dvd if you wanted to watch porn, or download a crappy ass 320x320 cloudly boxy looking video that takes 2 hours for 5 minutes.

now I can get on rapidshare and download hours of porn like its nothing. =)

I work for circuit city too... 0537 south jersey, car audio/video games supervisor as of last week.

I have also noticed that the blu-ray movies you can physically see compression in them... in which looks like shit.

Hd dvd looks crisp. I like the picture. Blu-ray sound is better due to uncompressed audio... but the picture makes peoples faces look pasty and chalked. It looks like garbage.

I hope you don't help people buy HDDVD based on your thoughts of bluray...

Either your store has a crappy setup using wrong settings or a cheap tv/br player, or your store is stupid and is using up converted old "remastered" dvds that are sold labeled as "BRDVD disc" also some of the newer movies can be poorly mastered making them look like crap, this goes for both HDDVD and BR.

watch MI3, Crank, ice aged, or any of the other worth while blue ray disc.

I took this picture of the movie while it was playing using no special settings. while it doesn't really show off just how great it looks, it does give you an idea.

HighDefDiscNews.com | Your source for Blu-ray Disc & HD DVD

go to that site and read the reviews for both HDDVD and Blu Ray disc, you'll find that both suffer from remixed old movies. Just like how you can find old 70s movies remastered in HD on INHD (tv station)

quote from a new Pirates 2 review for bluray.

Quote:
Video Quality on this release is in AVC MPEG-4 on a 50 gigabyte Dual-Layer Blu-ray Disc. This is nothing short of spectacular. This is easily the best video quality on a Blu-ray Disc release yet. I honestly almost think at times this video transfer could be better than “The Matrix Trilogy“. Which I think most everyone already knows is the real competition on the rival format HD DVD to these films on Blu-ray Disc. Keep in mind that “Pirates” does have a 50gb Blu-ray Disc to work with where HD DVD release of “The Matrix Trilogy” is currently limited to a 30gb disc (per film). But that’s beside the point. The point is that this film offers loads of beautiful imagery and I’m not just talking about Keira Knightley. The views at sea in the opening cinematic make for absolute “eye candy” at it’s finest. The major action scenes like the sword fight between Jack and Will when they first meet are amazing examples of how great this really looks in High Definition. In fact apparently I’m not the only one who believes so, Disney (Buena Vista) included that scene in the “Spotlight Showcase” feature in the bonus materials where they show the most “High Def” worthy scenes from a film on their Blu-ray Disc releases. That scene also offers great sound with the swords clashing and makes a good transition into my next part of this review…
Maybe you're store isn't stupid and is being paid by the HDDVD guys to play down the blu ray players. =)

cg animation looks good on blu-ray yes. Mi3 not to bad.. and crank was decent. I thought ultra violet, elektra, and superman all looked like shit. our demo disk for blu-ray looks good but then again its a demo disk made by the company to enhance sales on those products specifically.

Im different then most sales people. I tell my customers to look at the picture and tell me what they like. Then explain to them that everyone is different and has their own preference ... I could tell you which one I would like you to buy BUT... Im not the one watching the picture you are.

again this is a poll... so its opinionated.

I like hd dvd more myself... my opinion

you can easily find both priced under 800. I just sold a hd dvd player for 100$ yesterday.

If you buy a toshiba tv you got 200$ off the hd dvd player... came out to be 99.99 afterwards. not a bad deal.

When you say you can see the compression, is it still better than a standard dvd? I mean it can't be total crap?
