That supports both wireless and wired connections. My laptops current NIC sucks cock worse than Paris Hilton.
My wireless doesn't work at all, and if I move my laptop it disconnects my cable until i fudge around with it. I have a *cough* Dell Inspiron 2200. Any suggestions? I've searched endlessly for notbook NICs, but can't seem to find any. |

As Colbert would say: "Wireless or Wired - Pick a side, we're at war"
I don't think you can get both in one device/card. __________________

I would suggest getting the same maker as the router you're using to make it easier for compatibility.
And, why would you want both? I think a LAN is useless on laptops because most laptops are meant for mobile use and the LAN hardly gets any usage. I can see two scenarios 1)No WLAN avaliable 2)Gaming laptop. |

My laptop is used for both work and play.
If I'm at home I plug it in to get my 100 Mbps. If i'm out and about and I find a wireless spot I like to get on to check in with our office manager, or surf the web while I'm waiting for something to do. If I go on long trips it's useful to look up mapquest in a parking lot also. I need em both. My router is one that Verizon gave us. |

The main advantage to that 100 Mbit connection is eliminated by the fact that your internet connection likely isn't nearly that fast. The only time you'll see any true benefit to a LAN connection that fast is if you're moving large files across a network a lot which I doubt you do. Just get a router with a Wireless Access Point built in, and a cheap wireless card for your laptop. Both can be had fairly cheap these days. If you don't want to spring for an actual card for the laptop, there's also USB wireless adapters you can buy.
Newegg.com - LINKSYS WRT54GL IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11b/g Wireless-G Broadband Router - Retail - Wireless Router with excellent reviews and decently priced. Newegg.com - LINKSYS WPC55AG 802.11a/b/g Dual Band Wireless LAN PCMCIA Card - Retail - Good PCMCIA card. Customer Reviews Of TRENDnet TEW-429UB USB 2.0, 1.1 Compliant Wireless Adapter with HotSpot Detector - Retail - Decent USB device, has a built-in hotspot detector that tells you if the access point has security. Might be useful since you said you use hotspots some. __________________

I did a little more poking around on newegg but I didn't see anything that has both Wireless and Ethernet. I bet it would be a hundred bucks or more though.
What I bet you could do is run a PCMCIA Ethernet card and then just get a USB wireless adapter and only use the USB one when you want a wireless connection. That would be a lot easier than finding one PCMCIA card that does both, I bet. __________________

Thats what I was thinking after trying to find a replacement internal NIC for my laptop over the past week.
Dell... blah. My laptop is a year and a half old. 40 bucks for a 2 year warrenty that I didn't want to finance into it... POS Dell. |

in all likely hood the ethernet port and networking components are built into your motherboard and cant be replaced.
the wireless (if its built into the laptop) probably connects via a mini-PCI slot on the MB, which can be replaced if needed. so no, the wired and wireless are not together, they are seperate |

Find yourself a miniPCI card with an Atheros chipset.
Those cards are... neat. __________________

I said fuck it all and went to Best Buy. Picked up two Belkin 56g USB wireless adapters. One for the laptop, one for the desktop also.
For 30 bucks each, can't go wrong. |

I needed mine by today, didn't have time to wait. I was out by best buy so I stopped in best buy.
two days for the money to get to him, 2-3 days to get them from him. Nah, I don't think I went wrong anywhere. |
