Default speedo cable broke,

Hi guys, so yesterday I just traded my LS-V DA for this 90 EF with a 89 b16a / S1 cable trany / OBD0 pr-3 ecu, the car had CEL:
#1 (O2 sensor defect)
#10 (IAT defect)
#23 (KS defect)
the thing ran like a champ though. This morning im driving, and I lost my speedo and vtec stopped cracking, found speedo cable broken about 2" behind cluster, add CEL # 17 (VSS defect)

Question 1: What doner cars / years can I pull a speedometer cable?

Question 2: Speedo affects vtec how? I have searched and seen some b.s. about ecu must read speed over 15-20mph, or ecu thinks your free spinning engine. But my buddys crx w/ same set up (OBD1 ecu though) hit vtec w/o speedo cable and his CEL was on. Vtec requires oil temp, oil pressure and a tach signal... Does anyone know if analog vss or electric vss has any difference as far as ecu controlling vtec?
