It's VTEC, not V-TEC.
Get an ECU hack if you want, they're almost entirely a waste of money with the options available. At least use an OBD0 B16 ECU so your engine will have more fuel and timing in VTEC or it will blow up.

Indeed. VTEC not only uses different fuel maps than non-VTEC, it also uses different timing maps. While an ECU hack might do a semi-decent job of tricking the ECU into the fuel corrections it won't do anything about the timing tables.

Also, why would one opt to use a B-series ECU on a D? Is it because of what you stated, that "your engine will have more fuel and timing in VTEC or it will blow up?"

He suggested the B-Series ECU because 1) it's (pr3, pw0) the only OBD-0 Vtec ECU's available and 2) More fuel/running rich is better than running lean. Not that running rich is good, just that it's the lesser of two evils ![]()

You need an adjustable cam gear when doing a mini-me because if not the timing will be half a tooth off.

^^^What they said.
![]() Using the PR3 ECU will provide better timing and fuel maps than any non-VTEC ECU and you can use the hack to trim the fuel in VTEC a little...not that I'd choose this route with my engine. We pretty much know the dangers of running lean, too much heat and ka-boom. Running rich can actually do the same thing. The extra fuel washes the oil off of the cylinder walls, which creates excess friction, which creates heat, which goes ka-boom. A D16Z6 or Y8 ECU would be the best option, but that would require not taking a 15 year old short cut. We're extremely fortunate to have the tuning tools we have because most makes don't have them available. For example, the same tune that would cost us about $150-300 would cost an E36 BMW owner $1100-1400. Why not take advantage of the tools available? BMW owners resort to spending $350 for a generic basemap chip for their listed mods. Why not take advantage of the tools available? As EFHondaKid said, putting a 1.6l cam over a 1.5l block (other than the D15B VTEC) will advance the timing by 4.5* (half a tooth) so you need either a Y7/Y8 or adjustable cam gear. The key way location on the Y engines in 4.5* retarded over the '88-91' D16 engines. Important note: I often get the advanced/retarded part bassackwards, just know that either way it does redegree the cam/valve timing back to "zero".

If I could rep the three of you right now I would, but for some odd reason my dad's computer hates for me to even attempt to rep. That's a Pentium III 450mhz for you. haha
Thanks to the three of you for clearing that up. I have been hesitant to attempt a mini-me on my Y7 because I had those questions and a few more. Still, I am not one to ask a gazillion questions without doing my best to research the topic first. If I were to, and to the OP, I do not mean to thread jack...use a Y8 head on a Y7 block, then the obvious ECU to use would be a P2E, correct? However, a chipped P28, after converting to OBD1 would work even better, correct?

Either or... Any configuration of a 'frankenstien' motor weather it be D-Series or B-Series have slight cam timing problems. Think about it, you're taking two motors to make one motor... it's not gonna fit like a glove...

If you're not willing to do that, then the B16 ECU is your next best bet. It still won't be perfect, but it's still preferable to using a VTEC controller and your stock ECU...
