hey guys i have a stock 91 integra and this is what im thinking of doing...

- B20 head
- Skunk2 Intake Manifold
- PR3 (USDM B16A) pistons
- megan racing 4-2-1 header

i just have a few questions..
- am i missing anything that i have to upgrade? (will it blow up on me?)
- can i get away with using just 89 octane gas?
- would i have to tune it when finished?
- and what is your guesstimate on hp?

thanks for the help!

Don't bother with the B20 head. Not really worth it.

Have you ever built an engine before? What you are talking here is pretty involved because if you are going to tear the engine down enough to change pistons, you should rebuild it while you are there.

from what i have read the b20 head and the b18b head are exactly the same... that is why im going with the b20 ( i got it dirt cheap)

i have never done any engine building before, but my uncle is going to help and he took apart engines before.
do you think i can swap out the pistons with no problems, without doing anything to the block?

If you don't have a head for the block already then the B20 will do fine, if you have a B18 head on it, don't bother changing it out.

To swap pistons the right way you need new rings and a fresh hone on the cylinder walls. Other things that you should consider while the engine is apart are timing belt/watr pump, oil pump, new rod bearings, and new crank bearings. Unless you motor is dead, none of these extras are required, but because you have to have it almost completely torn down to swap pistons you might as well do a little maintenence as well.

ive been told not to bother with the pistons because the cylinder walls might be damaged/ not circular anymore..the stock engine has 158,xxx miles on it.
and also would i have to have this setup tuned to run right?

You can get the cylinder walls put back into round at a machine shop, but that opens up all the things I had listed earlier.

Yes, when you up your compression by that much you would have to have it tuned to run properly. Without the pistons, no.

the main reason i am going to do this is because my stock engine is burning oil, i figured i would change the head gasket and piston rings. i just want to stop burning oil and having something a little more powerful than stock.

i guess i will just switch heads, put the skunk2 im and megan header on and forget about the pistons. (dont have the money to get it tuned)
i am planing on doing this without removing the block.

The heads are nearly identical so swapping them would do very little unless the one you have on there is messed up. I would however look at the cams in boths heads then go with the more agressive ones.

yo throw some venom tunable cams venom intake manifold msd system venom fuel rail and injectors and run it !!!

Yo, that was one of the biggest fanboy posts evAr.

New rings will require the same work that new pistons will, you still need to hone your cylinder walls. And while you have it apart you should seriously consider some preventative maintenence. If this starts sounding expensive then you should question how much you are really willing to pour into this car.

i could just hone the thing myself right? i could just rent/buy a tool to do that at some auto store i think.

what do you mean by preventative maintenence, like bearings?

sound like a very nice first build.
if you have a spare b20 head make sure you send it to the machine shop to have it surfaced before you install in. (you can also mill it .020 or so to give you a little extra bump in compression)
make sure that you have those pistons balanced before you install them(very important). you can hone the cylinder walls yourself just get a honda service manual of a chilton book form auto zone(where ever) and follow the directions carefully. use wd40 the lubercate the stone. change your bearings and waterpump and timing belt.
if you feel like learning how to port now would be a good time to start(have the machine shop dissasemble the head) start with sand paper and smothen out the casting. when you do it by hand at first you will get a feel of what the factory path of flow is. then if you feel that you can modifiy it(meaning improve on the factory defects by grinding alittle) then try. dont do to much and try to keep the same idea for each cylinder. also gasket match the intake ports and the skunk manifold to the intake gasket.(makes for a smother flow).
also try and search for a h22 throttle body. it will work perfectly with the skunk manifold. get some cam gears and a ecu chip(or crome) and you ready to have fun on your first engine. try the b20 camshafts (i think that they are bigger)
use honda bearings, honda water pump, honda piston rings ,honda head gasket, intake manifold and exgaust gaskets along with oil pan and valve cover.
should be a very fun and reliable daily driver.
might need a new clutch so check out ebay.
good luck.

If you don't know anyone that knows how to hone the engine and you don't have access to the right tool (the one you can get at autozone is not the right one) you are more likely to make it worse. Have a machine shop hone the engine for you. The same goes for head porting, unless you can afford to throw the head away if you screw up, it isn't something to learn through experimentation.

hands on is the way to go expecially since you have a perfectialy good ls head.
try either one weather its the b20 or ls head unless you dont want to. if you want to just put it together then by all means go ahead.
i honed my b16 and a couple of ls blocks with a stone and a power drill and i came out fine(not buring oil) but i like to try things for my self. if you are less adventurous or your uncle is unable to hone a block then let the machine shop assemble your bottem end(short block). around my way to hot tank, hone and assemble at cost $500.
good luck with your build and remimber try to have fun and learn new things
you never know when you will bump into a vtec head.

ok my plans have changed only slightly. i am going to replace the head with the b20, im going to put on the skunk2 IM, the megan header, and replace the piston rings. i am going to be doing this in my garage and i plan on not taking out the block. hopefully it will take me a max. of 2 days.

from this picture what would be good to replace since i have to pull the pistons to change the rings. would #10 have to be replaced?

yes those are the rod bearings
there anr marks on your crank and marks on your rods.
use the service manuel to get the right color(size)for your car
(VERY IMPORTANT)unless you reuse the whats aleady there(not the best idea)
