I recently got a d16y8 motor and put it in my 93 civic lx. Was a very easy install and the HP gain over the 1.5 ltr was outstanding. since then ive put a cat back exauhst and a cold air intake system on it and converted it to a 5 speed. well I was comming home from work one stormy night and ran through a massive puddle i didnt see sucking a bunch of water into my motor and leaving me stranded on the side of the road in the pouring rain. the following day i got it running again but it had a bad knock in the motor. after tearing the motor down i found i bent the #1 rod and it was slapping the bottom of the piston wall leaving a small indention in it. im pretty sure it will be ok becouse its not high enough to contact the rings. now I was looking at a post https://hondaswap.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=8979 and seen that i could put pistons out of a d16a1 into my d16y8 and have a CR of 12.8:1. i put a reply in there "but all i got was a reply from some jurk that didnt think that changing your CR from 9.4:1 to 12.8:1 would gain you 46 hp" what i wanna know if there is anything else i have to do to make this work... thank you for all your help

12.8:1 is VERY high. are you ready to run 93/94 octane all the time?

sure, the power gain is there- but the cams should be upgraded to match the compression, and with that, comes valve springs, retainers, head work.. etc. its a never ending process.

take the block to a machine shop if its good do the piston swap fuck it...those engines are cheap.... but go to a dyno and use a good EMS....but the fuel needs are going to be there...like B saud

EXACTLY. It never ends and i do mean never.

But that would be a nice build, 12.8:1 compression, supposedly the zex cam for the d16y8 makes nice power, especially with that high of a CR. But with that like brian said, you need to upgrade the valvetrain.

Go for it. I'd like to see what kind of power you could make with that setup.

ok so rebuild the head, have somebody from a machine shop look over the block, and add a cam from zex for the increase of CR... sounds easy and cheap enough and the blocks are cheap so as long as it dont destroy the head ill b happy. what stage cam should i get cause i was reading up on the 3 different stages of cams and it said the stage 3 cam needed head mods made to get it to fit in there. stage 2 seems more street able to me though. the only dyno i know of close to where i live is one you hook to the crank, not a drive on wheel. Im close to indianapolis, IN if anybody knows of one close to me...

p.s. I already run 92/93 octane anyways, tends to run better on it. I live close to a small airport where they have 101 octane for $4.50 a gallon give or take i can mix 50/50 with that if need b.

Thanks for all the help and after its done ill add a reply to let everybody know how it works out. might be close to mid september to early october though.

prices ive found for parts so far

head gasket set $140
D16A1 pistons and rings $175 set of 4
new connecting rod $65
rod bearings $30
main bearings $40
oil pan gasket $17
head bolts $???
port & polish exauhst side only plus head rebuild $500 give or take
zex cam $250

if im missing anything or if something seems outragously priced please let me know. thanks for help.

:D ok got the pistons, rings, a new rod and rod bearings today at napa :D also found a place that has a wheel dyno close to me :D decided to pick up a 2nd job to fund this project and go ahead and do it right this guy that builds race engins said he would give me a discount if he did all the machine work so im going to go get another D16Y8 and take it to him and have him port and polish the head, put a 3 angle cut on the valves, put stronger valva springs in it with titiunum retainers, put the head on a flow bench, put a crowler stage 2 cam in it, knife edge the crank, balance and blue print the motor. he said he will do all this for $2000 even. is that a good deal??? thanks for all the help...

if he is paying for the parts 2k is okay. If thats onlny machine shop labor, thats a rip. I got MORE done for 700 dollars. He did my complete motor for 700$ and its about avg

ok what happened... got the pistons in gotta run 108 octain fuel now to keep it from spark knockin... cost me $75 to fill my 10 gallon tank up. as far as power increase goes dont notice a difference at all!!! only thing i can think of is im still running stock injectors and regulator. maybe even get my computer chiped??? and yes that was parts and labor.

ok as far as power goes noticed a major difference today "first time ive takin it over 4000 rpm since rebuild" quit different as far as power and sound goes souds really mean now... not like a pissed off lawn mower. but still not happy going to go get another head for it soon and send it off to the shop for port-n-pollish, cam, valve springs-n-retainers, and a 3 angle cut on the valves. then whan that is done ill put in some accel 30lb/hour injecters, fuel rail, regulator, and high flow pump while im changing the head out. looking foward to 20 mpg whith my fuel costing $7 a gallon hehehe... anybody know some links for that stand alone fuel managment cpu and greddy head gasket?? man i still have factory steel wheels and tires on this car this is going to take a while to finish lol. thanks for help :D

wow thats an awesome thread thanks for the link blanco :D that healped alot now just need that overtime at work and everything will be set in place and ill be running with the best of them :D
