Default Which Motor? Pls Help!!!

I'm new to Vtec motors and looking for advice before I start my next project.

Looking at either a B series or K series motor for the car. I am thinking of going all out and putting a turbo on the motor as well.

After having a bit of a look around the net I believe the B series motor might be the better option bang for buck, but what about throwing a turbo on it? which motor is more receptive to a turbo? would be happy with around 300 - 350 whp...

Thanks in advance.

Regardless of the donor car the B swap will be the cheapest and easiest, and 300-350 is pretty easily attained on a boosted B.

well if you just want 300whp then i say stick with the b series, and i would prolly go with a b18b1 or b18c1. the b1 will have lower compression but less hp, abd the c1 is high compression but with more hp, but remeber its all in the tune after you go turbo.

b18b1, upgrade the cams to something more suited to a turbo, and get it tuned. you should be just fine. Its the cheaper way to go in the long run and you still get good results out of it.

Ok B18B1 it is... Should I build the bottom end or bolt on the turbo and hope for the best? Also what turbo would be best? what boost would be required? it's going into a circuit car so I want the power to be useable and not all at the top of the RPM range...

Thanks again for your help.

If you want a usable powerband with the turbo on the car, you're going to need some help in the gearing department. My suggestion is this setup:
B18B1 - Stock bottom end, decent valvetrain and cams, decent headwork.
B16 transmission
A 57 trim t3/t4 - These are excellent turbo's for the street/track because they spool decently quick and still carry the car all the way through the RPM range.
Manifold/charge piping/bov/wastegate etc is all your choice, but I would DEFINITELY get a quality turbo and wastegate.

Well it's not actually going in a civic, it's going in a mini cooper... I do know how to drive if that was your concern, I have owned heaps of fast cars, the biggest hp coming from a 1000hp LS2 twin turbo.

Also thanks to everyone elses responses. I am actually going to do internals as well so the engine actually lasts...

Cheers

Ok, Since the car will no doubt be thrown around a track for 30+ mins at a time I really have to think about reliability...

I've decided I will do a rebuild with new pistons, rods and crank (if i should). I'll also throw on an intake, injectors, valve springs, valves etc. as needed to support the turbo.

I am thinking of going away from the B18B1 and going for a B18C VTEC...

What I want to ask is which B18 VTEC long motor I should pick up as a base? is there no real difference as I am going to throw low compression pistons etc. in what ever I get... Is the bottom end and head ultimately the same???

Thanks in advance and apologies if any of the above sounds silly, new to vtec...

Cheers

There's really only two choices to begin with, either the GS-R or the Type R. The Type R has higher compression and some factory upgrades in the head. It's really meant to be an N/A screamer, so if you're planning on dropping the compression and boosting, just go with the GS-R (B18C1)...

My friend put the bolt on Greddy kit on his GS-R, he only made 234 to the wheels but i was an all stock motor.

I have always like the idea of a turbocharged K-series in a really lightweight hatchback or something. I also saw some pics of the V6 motor swapped in as well which would be amazing with the torque.

If you are going to do a rebuild, then getting the ITR is a waste considering you are buying it for its higher than normal comp pistons and such. If that is the case, get the gsr. You'll be happier financially, and since you are just replacing the innards you dont have to worry about anything else. Just my $0.02
