ok so...

so im new to the whole game. after being ripped off one to many times ive decided to start doing repairs myself. (whatever i feel i can do). i started with brakes, rotors, dist. cap, plugs, wires, etc.

now i know that i plugged the new wires in to the cap right, but upon starting my car it was running real hard, w/no power. so after checking my connections it was still hard. a guy at the hobby shop said i had my wires wrong and tried to fix them. long story short i took it to AAA and they said a wire was wrong and fixed it ASAP. later my check engine light came on and after getting the code read i discovered the catalytic converter was performing below efficiency. ive read this could be a direct result of the misfires that were taking place.

my question is if my cat is indeed "plugged" do i need to replace it? i didnt want to start modding my car until the parts actually went out so here is my chance i guess. ive seen the random technology cats but is that a pretty straightforward install with no welding? and im not so much interested in performance due to the wimpy engine i have but what would you all recommend if i am trying to keep the cat and muffler price tag below $400 (if possible) w/o a shitty sound. thanks for your help. my specs on my car is as follows...

2000 Honda Civic HX:( ... no mods all stock. thanks again

It was the misfire that threw the code, get the codes cleared, welcome to Hondaswap, and this thread is 3 years old.

lol
welcome and :werd: on the dead thread

if your state doesn't have emissions inspections the cheapest solution would be to clean out the cat...

codes

well when the codes were read originally it was that a cylinder was running lean... then when they were cleared and the problem was fixed. the cat code came up like 30-45min later.. the gas mileage is still about the same i havent notcied to much a diff. so im going to get the codes cleared anyway and see if it comes back.

now if it does (indiana does have emissions laws) what are your suggestions? thanks sorry for the dead thread i got to it from google...

the cat code came up like 30-45min later..

i think it takes that long for it to get to normal operating temp or something
when you go for emissions, if they see your codes were reset, or the batteyr unhooked they tell you to go drive around for 30 minutes and come back...

so sounds like you're gonna need a OE replacement...
most aftermarket "cats" are straight thru designs and will more than likely not pass emissions

If emmisions isnt an issue, lose the cat and go with a Skunk2 test pipe....$90 ebay....20 min install...good sound a little more power

blanco... maybe these ideals differ with different cars.

on my 2000 mirage - with the sparkplug anti-foulers, im able to no longer toss a code for the secondary cat (which isn't even there) AND i pass emissions. my car ISNT loud.

does this same respect apply to me even though i'm meeting massachusetts strict law on car exhausts? i even passed the decibel level without a resonator.

I don't think Blanco was referring to the noise. I think he was referring to the smell of unburnt hydrocarbons coming from a car running without a cat. If you are running at least one cat, you're good. My buddy replaced the exhaust system on his wrx with a Cobb 3" system, and there was like 4 cats on the stock system, yikes.

if you have a local junk yard why not try to purchase a cat from them. be sure there are no local laws against buying used cats.
