Finally got my car to be able to be tested using the tailpipe test, but it didn't pass the low speed testing. The NOX or is it NOx was high. High speed it passed fine. Was wondering if anyone here has actually tried this or can recommend something like this that actually does help.

That stuff is like octane booster. It's crap. High NOx usually means it is running too lean, or at least that is what I have been told. Check your O2 sensor, also check for vaccuum leaks. Get some injector cleaner too if you haven't done that in a while. Is there anything wrong with your car that you can tell from driving it?

I do believe I need to be getting around to replacing my cat converter and like you mentioned, put some injector cleaner through it. Any particular kind you suggest?

obvious? do injector cleaner. I stick with namebrand, but all seem the same ... & tuneup- wire/plugs, cap, & rotor

I was told a story about pouring a quart of ATF into the tank helping a vehicle pass an inspection that it had previously failed. The guy was saying that the readings were extremely low. Maybe the story was embellished and maybe it was pure horseshit. I don't know anyone who works at a smog check station, but those folks probably know better than most what works and what doesn't. Id probably try that if I was running out repair options.

DO NOT put ATF in your gas. Thats just not smart. If your reading high on NOx, pull some timing (hopefully your obd1) and that should help a bit.

Thumbs up

Try "Sea Foam". I used it and it worked pretty good! You can pick some up at your local AutoZone / Advanced Auto.

werd to seafoam, but i would recommend doing it at a friend's farm or something away from a highly populated area. when i did the seafoam treatment to my lude it was like i had blown a head gasket. The ammount of white smoke was just plain staggering.

the only thing about seafoam is that when you start putting it in through the pcv, be VERY careful to do it very slowly. If you let the PCV suck it up too fast you can potentially hydro lock your engine.

nox is created with the high temp in the engine, hence the EGR valve. its puts inhert gas in which lowers combustion temp which lowers nox. and guys please dont waste ur money on injector cleaner that u put in ur gas tank it does little to nuthing. get a real injector clean with a pressurized tank hooked to ur fuel rail with cleaner in it.

It finally........f'in.........PASSED! Problem was a bad converter. I installed a new one, took it in, and it passed with flying colors. Thank you all for your suggestions. This board is great!

hmm, any chance of passing with no cat? my race car is gonna have to be tested this summer. im running a custom sized test pipe, and putting a cat on isnt a bolt up affair. id have to get one custom made up to be the right size.

just wondering what to expect. everytime ive gone to get inspected, they dont even look under the car to see if it has a cat, they dont even look under the hood. they just make sure the gas cap is tight then puts it on the rollers/sniffer. what results can i expect from no cat? high HC, high NOx? anything i can do to try to fudge the numbers (with the ecu, or other adders to the gas tank)

motor is a built b18c
11.5 comp
s2s2 cams
320 injectors
tuned on crome

I don't know what the test results look like without a cat, but I do know people in the Dallas area that passed the sniffer without a cat in place. All it takes is good tuning.

I HIGHLY doubt you will pass with s2s2 cams and no cat. Tune or no tune. If you want to try, get a pretest to see where you are at. If you are running too high in HC, lean out the idle. Too lean a condition will cause combustion temps to go up, and NOx emissions will likely increase. With 11.5:1 cr, you are likely to be running higher NOx anyway. Advance the timing a bit if you can, and it may aleviate this some. Just make sure you save the bin as a smog only bin, and revert back to your previous tune after smogging is all said and done.

let me know how it goes. At least if you get a cat, your exhaust won't smell so bad. lol

well from my experince g2p is a cleaner you use it before the test i would try acetone 2 onces per 10 gallons of gas should lower you also if you have an egr take it apart and clean out the carbon hope this helps

I had the same problem with an 88' Chevy Caprice Estate Wagon, tried using the G2P formula, it's crap. Not even worth the time of buying and trying. Like raidmax suggested, i used seafoam too, which helped a little, but i also had to clean out my egr valve. Just pull it off and soak it in gas for a day or so, best way of cleaning it that i came across. With a clean egr, seafoam and an octane booster, i got my smog-monster to pass no problem.

All I know is that my 1991 camry failed the emissions test and someone told me to run a bottle of "guaranteed to pass" through a tank of gas, so I did, filled the tank back up and re-took my emissions test, and it passed! I was pleasantly surprised.
