Fall break from school was last thursday and friday. I decided that since second gear was grinding i would replace it over this break. First step is of course to remove the transmission from the car.
this is part one of a two part process. i will post part 2 in a different thread later when i have time.
First remove your intake.
Unlplug the vehicle speed sensor (vss) which is loaced on top of the trannsmission.
Disconnect starter motor cables.
Disconnect ground wire and remove radiator hose bracket.
Unplug the reverse indicator switch harness.
Remove bracket holding wires for starter motor.
Remove the two bolts holding the slave cylinder bracket and remove the two bolts holding the slave cylinder to the tranny.
Remove lower portion of header and cat.
drain tranny fluid and remove axles. i didnt take pics of this cuz i did it on my own and didnt have a camera man.
disconnect shiftlinkage from transmission using an 8mm punch.
remove front right mount bracket.
remove the four mounting bolts holding the tranny on the block. three visible, one is behind the starter.
remove the front and rear stabalizer bars (i only have a pic of the front)
remove the flywheel cover.
at this point you should support the engine with a jackstand or two. under the oil pan is a good place to support the engine. also, place a transmission jack under the trans.
then remove the upper transmission mount. you must take this completely out of the car.
the next mount is hard to get to. it is in the rear of the engine compartment. you must remove all the bolts, but due to the size of the mount, you can leave it in place.
you are now ready to take the trans out. double check to make sure you have all mounts and bolts removed. i forgot one when i thought i was finished. if you are sure you have no more mounts or bolts holding the tranny on, have someone opperate the jack for you and get under the car.
find a place to pry the clutch casing away from the block. big screw driver helps. go side to side evenly and have the person opperating the jack raise, lower and pull as you see fit.
first time around it took me a total of 6.5 hours to take it out. i took my time and everything went smooth. the hardest part was the rusted bolts on the exhaust.
before this, the biggest adventure with my car was installing suspension and replacing axles. it is easy if you have the right tools.
part one was obviously to remove the transmission. part two envolves cracking the trans open taking the countershaft out and appart to replace the 1st/2nd syncro set. i do not have time to post it now, so it will come later with much more detail.
