Default My *cracked* timing belt..

This belt has been on for only 4 years, and less than 25K miles.. Those lines you see are all cracks.

did you or do you have an oil leak somewhere behind the cover? or is your belt tensioned so tight you could use it as a trampoline?

I have seen that with some of the aftermarket cheap timing belts. I would only use a oem belt or better ( TODA etc..)

Question

The funny thing is, this belt was bought at a Honda dealer, and *seems* original, with "Honda" stamped on it.

Weather could be a factor, it is definitely hot and humid here.

Could the age of the belt have been a factor? 4 years may be too long to leave a belt on, even with low mileage.

Also, there was an oil leak at the head cover gasket (which was fixed earlier). I suppose the oil could have gotten to it, but there wasn't any evidence of oil at the time I took the photo.

The belt also didn't seem too tight, at least not when I saw it. Maybe it was too tight when installed, and loosened because of the cracks?

reikoshea: Why? Is this type of belt damage common in hot areas? Thanks.

rubber cracks under super hot temps, and those places are abnormally hot. its not the humidity, but the dry heat that will cause a belt to crack. happened to my alt belt after not driving for a few months. i guess thats just a texas summer.

That just looks too tight, 4 years of sitting is way too long too.
Expect your tires to explode soon.

honda does rate most of their timing belts for 6 years or 90K-105K i worked for a honda dealer for about 12 years. only time i have seen that with a honda belt when its very old over 6 years or like mentioned in very dry heat.If that belt was too tight you would have heard it whistle like a supercharger.

totalautosports: so you think this wasn't caused by being too tight, or by heat? Could oil contamination have done this kind of damage?

the heat is very possiable may be a comination of the both. oil usually makes it stretch and it will look very oily like tire shine.
