I've seen this term pop up quite a bit, but I'm not sure what it means. As you might know I have an h22a is that an open or closed deck and what is the difference or advantages/disadvantages of the two? Thanks
 
closed deck. Check out the block filling tech article. that article is about creating a closed deck (essentially) its cheaper to make an produce an open deck, but a closed deck allows for sleeve support...essentially making a stronger bottom end.

Someone can add where i have missed or i am wrong, but thats been my understanding.

honda manufactures open deck bottom ends, at lteast the B, D, and H series all come open sleeves. Check out the article written by Hotrex about sleeving the deck yourself or, you can buy sleeves that you weld in and the resurface the block afterwards, having a sleeved block will prevent the expansionand eventual failure of the cylinder walls due to stress caused from any number of things but in particular excessive amounts of boost
 
So what about the A20A3, C32B, F22B, K20A, K24, and the ZC's to name a few?
 
i figure open deck, just since it is easier to make them, and none of those enginge really need to handle great amounts of stress, but i am not sure
 
well just so you know, H22As are closed deck. So not ALL honda engines are open deck. You ca still sleeve closed decks. You just bore the block and press in a sleeve. Not all sleeves are those CRAPPY MID sleeves that everyone is pushing. Darton sells more than that, and BELIEVE me the normal sleeves are just miles ahead of the MIDs, but you dont need a machine shop to install a mid.
 
Not all H series blocks were closed deck... only a small number of them (compared to the whole).
 
hmmm... how can one tell if thier h22a is open or closed deck without removing the valves and stuff?
 
really isnt...not that i can think of. I almost had a heart attack when i replaced my head gasket.

or are some american h22's closed as well. i have to think honda did this in some kind of oder for some reason. are h23's closed?

im gonna say american h23s are open. If i blew a rod through my H23 im willing to bet they are open deck. i never took the head off to make sure, but id say it was open.

I think 4th gen preludes were all closed (a1 american) and then the a4 was open. thats just my guess, ive got nothing to back it up. anyone know if the euro R was closed or open?
 
NOT ALL HONDA MOTORS are open deck...

F series are closed deck - FACT
H22 OBD1 are CLOSED DECK - strong rumor
H22 OBD2 are OPEN DECK - Strong rumor
D series are open deck - fact
not sure on ew's
and i am quite sure B's are all open deck...

you can sleeve regardless of whether its open or closed, it just makes it harder...

im gonna say american h23s are open. If i blew a rod through my H23 im willing to bet they are open deck. i never took the head off to make sure, but id say it was open.

unfortunately this makes no sense...
rods and open vs closed deck are two very seperate issues...
unless you had serious sleeve movement which led to your rod failure which is highly unlikely...
H23 lower ends suck ass...

uh... wow, i'll just give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you meant head when you said valves and stuff...
as far as i know there is no simple way to know if its open or closed deck...
you could prob remove the water pump and use a mirror to see, perhaps?
 
i made the comment about blowing a rod through the block because youd think that if there was THAT MUCH MORE metal between you and the outside of the block, it would be more difficult to put a hole in the block.
 
Are all F series are closed deck? Even the SOHC Non-Vtec F22?

Very cool if so, boosting it soon so I'm curious.
