Default Violent Clunking When Turning

I will introduce and try to help this community in some fashion on a later date.
My friend gave me his 92' b16a Sir2 Hatch w/ LSD. It's a long story.
This car has had this problem since the swap was done, and it has gotten progressivly worse. The motor before was barely running, and didn't put any power to the wheels, so it could be anything.

when i turn at low speeds and lightly accelerate, there is a constant violent clunking from the front end. the wheel will actually jerk when it clunks in the direction opposite of what i'm turning. If i accelerate hard and turn, there is no clunk and all is fine. I can go in reverse with no problem and turn either direction with no clunk.

motor mounts are filled in with 3m windo weld, no movement from motor.
bushings/ball joints are not in good condition. They will be replaced when i have cash.
axles are "new". they've been replaced with 3 sets.

I'm stumped, and am considering rebuilding the lsd after I replace all the bushings. I know someone else has had this problem before. I am thankful for any response.

i've totally had the clunking but i can't remember wtf was going on. it was in my jeep. oh right - it was stuck half in/out of 4wd. that has absolutely nothing to do with your car, except to say something is fubar with your car and a pro should look at it. wish i had anything else for you .

hate to say it and I know you said you replaced them, but from the discription it sounds axel related. To check lsd jack up the front end (so the wheels are off the ground) of the car and put it in gear, both wheels should spin evenly.

Check your CV joints. Pronto. Don't drive over about 60mph before you get them checked out.

yep, sounds like a CV to me as well, replace the whole thing, it's only like 70 bucks for a reman with the core for each side. Replace the entire unit, not just a boot.

Get up under the car, and look at it. If you're getting this bad of a clunk already, you've had a bad CV boot for a while now. I can't stress how dangerous it is to drive your car the way it is.

If the boot has let the grease leak out long enough to hear a noise like that, you have to replace the joint too. There's no way around it.

My Civic was making a loud ass knocking sound and doing some of that shit right after my swap, but mostly during turning. So I fixed it the redneck way and purposely ran my rim into a curb at around 10-15 mph and it did the trick! Drives perfectly fine whenever it's not sitting around with a blown headgasket.

Rims on there are garbage anyway and I didn't hit the front bumper or fender on the curb at all just scuffed the one ugly rim.

I know it sounds stupid, but make sure your brake pads are secured well, your caliper retainer bolts are tight, and your axle nuts are tight and chalked (take a screwdriver and tab the axle nut in). Also, check your CV boots.

Does the sound get louder under load? If you let up on the throttle, is it less severe? This could be a wheel bearing, as well. Mine made some horrible noises when it went bad.

thanks for all the responses

I had the car on a lift today, and went over everything under the car.

the axle on the passenger side is too short. I was able to pull the splines out of the tranny about 2 inches with it installed. wow. I ordered this axle from a 94 integra non abs. is there a specific submodel or different year car i should get it from? maby i have a different half shaft or something?

I spun the tires with it on the lift, and they both turned evenly in the same direction. does this completely put the lsd off the list of possible causes?
before i got the car, my friend was convinced it wasn't the axles because of how many times they've been replaced. so either i have the wrong axles or half shaft i guess. weird stuff

I really wish I still had my pictures of the axles on my old ys1 tranny. One actually has shorter splines (I want to say it was the passenger's side, but it was awhile ago so I can't say 100%). It's very possible that you have the wrong axles, but it may also be the axle nut being loose.

As far as the LSD goes, if it's the stock viscous LSD it won't inhibit spin until one side starts spinning faster than the other. Unless you can put some resistance on one side and spin the other with considerable force (not your hands) you won't be able to rule out the LSD. However, I'd continue chasing down the axle issues first and foremost. It sounds like you may be onto something there.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the '90-'93 Integra axles are the ones you want. They might be the same for '94+ but I can't guarantee that. You definitely want non-abs though.

Default same problem

yeah i recently ordered a jdm b16 SiRII sec gen with LSD from osakajdmmotors.com
i swapped the motor into my 94 civic cx hatch. The swap went great took two days in my rock driveway with all hand tools. by the end of the second day we went for a test drive as soon as i tried turning right out of my driveway we heard a loud clunking sound and i could even feel it through the steering wheel. We put 94-01 integra axles in both sides. we replaced both sides four times. Every time still made the same clunking sound. I then replace the old 94-01 integra half shaft with the another 94-01 integra half shaft the one with a male end and a female axle. stiull had the clunking. This sound only comes on right turns when accelerating. people are telling me i may need the 90-93 integra half shaft the one with a female end and a male axle goes into. The wierd thing is the motor came from japan with the 94-01 half shaft. If anybody could help me i would much appreciate it.

2 inches is alot man, so axle play theres only about 2.5-5 inches in there most of the time driving then, It really sounds CV related, maybe the joint was packed improperly at the factory.. no metal shavings or ground gears when you pulled the CV? or did you not pull it all the way.. with that much play hell pop that lower control arm bolt & Balljoint out cut your wheel all the way one way and it'll pop right outa the trans side with 1 bolt coming off.. not a good feeling knowing that.. imagine going 60 down the road, cv comes out right there catches the road right, it will definatly flip your car over, its happened before! Its not uncommon atall.. I'd be all over that, specially if it has alot of motor work already done to it.. wonder how hard that trani was drove in the part mayybe the differential is also messed up.. and your catchin hell on both ends.. its alot easier to isolate a problem when your not really hearing 2 problems and throws your senses off about narrowing it down right cause by now its probally resonating the noise throughout the whole engine bay.. . Well good side about this is gettin onn here and talking to all these people like myself that dont have simple problems like everyone i know on the streets (My alternator, my radiator) hell I wish I only had that luck, its always a spun main, electrical problem, unexplainable valve clater with new bearings that where plastigauged and perfect in tolerances, back lash / valve play all perfectly adjusted within .0005) Atleast you get schooled on what your really hearing in the future..
