Ok. I adjusted the valve lash at .008 on my exhaust and .006 on the intake. I still have a very noticable tap. I am assuming its a bent valve. What is the down side of driving with it this way until I can get new valves and install them? Other than the horrible noise and awkward looks from people...lol Any opinions or info that would assist me in the replacing of the valves would be appreciated. Its a B18b1 from a 94 teg. Thanks

just like alot of motor: worse performance, worse gas mileage, and more than likely will get worse and go kaboomy.

if you really think its the valves. then pull the head and get it professionally rebuilt. Sometimes you can just get a used head for cheap or another engine entirely. Price it out, Running a compression test may help verify results.

Are you sure the noise isnt coming from something else? A bad timing belt tensioner can also resemble a valve tappet noise. If your valve/s were bent, you would get more than just a tap.

I readjusted the timing and then rechecked the valve gap today and it is still tapping loud. The cra runs good but it will have a slight miss at idol. It also has a slight backfire when coming off the gas. I replaced the tensioner timing belt plugs wires dist cap and rotor and all the gaskets before dropping the engine in. Im sure its the valves. I have another head that was supposedly rebuilt but is warped slightly. I think I will use the valves and springs from it to replace the ones in the car now. Looks like ill be pulling it apart this weekend. Thanks for the info.

Such noise can also come from excessive wear of rocker arms. Check for excessive wear on the rocker shafts.

Rocker arms do not wear out excessively. As a matter a fact, they dont take much beating at all.

When heads are rebuilt aren't the valves cut and seated to the specific head that they are on? Just something to check. I could be wrong I have not rebuilt a head on my own.

As for the other head, having it shaved to even it out may be worth your time as opposed to pulling parts from one head to get another one to work.

I might have the other head checked out. If its not in to bad of shape I could get it fixed. It was supposed to have been rebuilt when I got it. There is a cam retainer bolt broke off in it so it would have to be drilled out and tapped but there is nothing hard about that.

If I bought new valves and stuck them in without doing anything else to the head would I be creating more problems???????

Rocker arms can definetly get worn out. I have seen it more then a few times. It happens most often from not performing valve adjustments on time. When the clearance is excessive it wears rocker arms and cams prematurely. The ls motor has a notoriously loud valvetrain design when compared to a vtec head anyways. My sister had a prelude with the h23 that has basically the same valvetrain design and that engine never had the valves adjusted in my opinion. By the time it had over 100k miles the head was so noisy with the ticking/tapping. It only slightly improved after adjusting them, the rockers and cams were severely worn causing the noise because there was definetly no bent valves.
