Hello my 1999 civic hatch DX motor has taken a crap, Its a non vtec i believe its the d16y7?.

My goal is: keep an auto trans and a low cost.

What motor should i put in i was thinking a d16y8 and wire up vtec with a new ecu and harness. Would there be a better motor for my needs?

Also dose a d16y8 bolt up to the d16y7's auto tranny?

Thanks so much im new to civics so... sorry for the noob questions.
Joe

just get the d16y8 vtec motor run a few extra wires useing your stock dx harness and yes it will bolt up to your dx auto tranny and all easy swap it will drop right in. but unless your gona mod it a perty good bit , i would just put another y7 in there

Thanks for the quick response,I really appreciate you help and knowledge.
I plan to do intake exhaust and maybe a cam and down the road a turbo.

Should i go d16y7 (nonvtec) or d16y8 (vtec) with those mods.

Thanks again so much
Joe

well in that case just go ahead and get the y8

you will handle him just fine, there really not that fast unless the ecu has been chipped

Hes bone stock, Its good to know that.
One more question. Do you happen to have a write up or some type of info to run the vtec wires off my stock non vtec harness?

naa not me but theres tons of info on that in here just try the search box because im not for sure where its at, but its real easy its like 3 wires.

Just FYI, automatic Civic transmissions tend to break when you start putting a significant amount of power over stock (i.e. boost) through them...

Guess ill have to do the auto to manual conversion before i boost it.

Going to buy the parts tomorrow just double checking, Tell me if im missing anything or something is wrong for my D16Y7 to D16Y8 swap.

D16Y8 motor
Civic Ex harness
Civic Ex Auto ECU

Thanks so much for all the information
Joe

you really dont need the ex harness but it would maker it easier other than that looks good

u can use your existing harness.. i used my existing harness and i did a b16 swap i had to do some wiring but it wasnt that bad

i dont think you need a new Trans ECU u should just need the engine and the engine ecu

Who said he needed a transmission ECU? No one did, to my knowledge...

Ya if he flashed his ECU lol those things can cook after an ECU flash

How do you figure a bone-stock single cam with an automatic transmission is going to "cook" after a simple ECU flash? Or are you talking about the GTI?
