I was wondering what engine would give the best possible gas mileage in my '94 Del Sol S. currently my car has a d15 but the block is... well... I guess you could say chipped(long story short, the previous owner must have tried to pry the head off and now every couple of months the headgasket needs to be replaced). Now I am looking for a new motor and since I will be going to college about 3 hrs away from my house next year I would like to get the best possible mileage. I know that it will be impossible to get exact numbers but anything will be helpful.

I'm considering a d15b vtec, and would llike toknow what kind of gas mileage one of those got. I would also like to know if the trans. I have would work for it or if I would need a new one(I'm not sure what the numbers on the trans are but it mounts onto my d15b7.

Thanks for any help,
Shane

You've got some choices. The easiest would be the engines from the CX and VX Civics of the 92-95 generation. Those would bolt right in to your car and give you good gas mileage (they make 40-50 mpg in a hatchback, so maybe slightly less for your Del Sol since it's a bit heavier). There are some other choices as well, but the 92-95 CX and VX engines would be the easiest, no doubt...

I'm actually thinking of getting the JDM d15b vtec, I hear it gets great mileage at low speeds and above average at normal speeds, correct?

Which one are you talking about? The one from 92-95 is a lot like the US-spec EX engine, and will get similar mileage. The one from 96-00 has 3-stage VTEC which helps a lot with mileage, but you'll have to make some wiring changes to your car (convert to OBD2)...

3-stage VTEC head or D15Z1(VX) head on a D16 GX block + tuning :)

Then, there are the D13 and D14 engines sold in other countries. Honestly, a D15Z1 swap would be your best bet. After that, it's the 8v engines(D15B6 out of the HF, and the D15B8 out of the CX). The dual VTEC engine would be good but most people don't get the correct ECU for it.

<-~57mpg(hwy) in a D15B VTEC EF :D

I want the three stage one but all of them I find seem like the other one...
(I should probably mention I'm 18 and don't know much about this, but my dad will be helping me along the way, along with a friend of mine who swapped a b16 into his civic)

What type of driving do you do? Honestly, the only place where the 3-stage engine will make a noticeable difference is if you race. Otherwise, the VTEC-E engine will perform just as well but just makes less peak/upper HP.

But...if you race, there's plenty of "regular" D-series engines that'll walk the 3-stage engine mainly because of better aftermarket support.

I don't race at all, I would like a decent amount of power though because the road from my house college is VERY mountainous and I would hate to be stuck in the slow lane w/ all the semis lol

In that case I'd avoid any of the 8 valve motors...

Go for the VTEC-E(D15Z1) engine with a DX transmission.

You state "40-50 mpg" for the HB. Just curious - a misprint? I have a 92 Civic Si HB, and on the best of days, keeping RPMs low (shifting ASAP), keeping under 65, I can squeeze 30 out of her. Maybe 31 at 55. That's with 74K miles, recently tuned, kickin' back and enjoying the ride. What have you done to yours to get 40-50?

Sounds like something is messed up. I get 35+ highway with my boosted gsr setup.

You didn't read carefully enough. I said the CX and VX model hatchbacks get that kind of mileage. The Si does not...

Thanks for all the help, I'm really glad I asked on here because if I hadn't I would have probably bought the d15b vtec that didn't have the three stages because I didn't realize there was a difference, and realized I don't even know where to look to find the three stage... I'll probably go with the d15z1 like k2e2vin said. Now I just need to find one...

get yourself a D16y8 got a lil power+vtec i easily get over 45mpg easy on the interstate going 85mph.
