I am in the us army stationed in lousiana and drive 40 miles round trip to work each day and I need advice on what to do. I am currently driving my truck which makes 13 MPG (not a good thing spending $500 a month for gas). My work car is a 2002 Honda civic, EX coupe, 5 speed manual, with the 1.7L vtec engine with 82,000 miles which i bought 2 yrs ago with 60K on it and I still owe on it and the engine is bad. Believe me it has been my savior, but it started knocking so I parked it 3 months ago until i thought had enough money to fix it, I thought it was a rocker arm but the mechanic I recently took it to says its ether a the main bearing or the 4th piston bearing and its not worth fixing and i'm better off replacing the engine. He said he found a used engine with 50K and he would put it in for $2500, i'm leary about the quality of the engine and the price. Now down to the bottom-line; is this even worth doing? If it is, is this a good deal? If not, Where can i find a reliable engine without paying an arm and a leg and what should I pay to install? I see some engines on ebay for $400-$600 with various mileage, but i dont know if I should take a chance!

P.S. I posted this in a couple different places, didn't know where to post.

thats high as hell, like you said those motors should be about 700 bucks, just get it and put it in yourself or pay a shop i say about 500 bucks at the most to do the swap

thats what i figured i wish i knew how to do it my self.
 
its not hard at all...
drain the fluids,unbolt the axles,then the hib assembly,pull the axles out,unhook all the wiring,unhook shift linkage,hook up a hoist,pull the motor mount bolts,lift that bad boy outta there..
and putting it in s reverse process

or you could pull the pan and see how bad the bearings are,have the crank micrpolished and put new bearings..
but def. dont pay that much for a direct replacement
 
Where are you? Fort Polk? and you live in DeRidder?

If so, go to the auto hobby shop. Take that car away from your mechanic. For some reason, everyone in that area has no idea what to do with Hondas.


If you don't live in the Beauregard Parish area, you can disregard my advice, and take it to a honda dealership; they'll know wtf they're doing. Not some backwoods mechanic.

I say fix the engine at a honda dealership, there should be one in Leesville. (once again disregard if it doesn't apply.) Your mechanic is taking you for a ride. He knows you're military, he knows you don't know much about cars. You're his cash-cow.

It's been a while since I've been there, but I'm pretty sure there's a honda dealership in Leesville (same disclaimer applies here too) that you can go to.
