newbie needing to know qhat motor i have

i bought this last week a 91 crx si. had shave door handles no poppers, and for some reason had 2 car alarms. that didnt work. well i got it for $800 with a quote of "has 190k on the shell and 110k miles on the motor". it was stated i had a b16 motor and i couldn't find any pics that matched the motor. i did buy this car for a commuter, so in a sense i guess it doesnt matter what motor it is, i would just like to know. oh and its a 5 speed manual tran. all help would be appreciated and thnk you in advance.

There is a 1 inch by 1 inch square on the block just below where the upper radiator hose goes into the head, scrape of the grease and see what it says, its a D series a D15 something, but its not a B16 thats for sure.
 
thank you yeah i beleive if i read it right its the d16a6. ok so now that somewhat figured out is it a decent motor and if i ever decided to work on the engine and make it faster would it be worth putting in the money or no?
 
It may be an A6 block but that isnt an A6 head. The D16A6 is VTEC, that head isnt. If thats the case you got an abortion, its really kind of backwards. Most people take the D16 VTEC heads and put them on the D15 blocks. Seems like whoever had the car before you was the kid in preschool who tried to jam the square peg in the round hole. IMO just leave the car how it is, drive and be happy with what you have. Is the shell in good shape? If not the only mod I would worry about doing is slapping a "30mpg+" sticker in the back window to piss off the V8 people lol.
 
D16a6 are killer motors,,known to be the best sohc non vtec..

its really easy to get power from them,,even by just doing intake,header,exhaust,,and minime..
theyre boost friendly as well

it has an exhaust already ok lets say i want to do it up now im getting a little interested any direction you want to put me in. thank you again

to the OP.. the a6 is not a vtec motor.. its the d16z6 that is.. but the a6 is still a very strong motor. .. looks like yours may need some new gaskets though

The D16A6 isnt VTEC, I have one in my Stock 89 CRX si, m friend also has one that he got from is brother out of a 91 crx si, The d16a6 isnt vtec
 
The D16A6 is a very good motor. There are some people putting down more hp than B16s with those.

With P29 pistons, milled head, reground cam/valvetrain, bolt-ons, and a good tune; you can make pretty good power for cheap.
 
I know I ran the muda sukin chit outta my d16 and it held up great! They take so much of a beating its crazy :) Like when i held it at the rev limiter for about 3 minutes straight cuz a guy running a cavalier said it would blow after less than a minute... I asked him to do it for 30sec's in his car and he drove off :D

ok. first decide what you want to do..keep it all motor or go turbo and/or nitrous..
if you get a d16z6 head(the VTEC head) it will bump compression-thus giving you more power..
you can put a header and intake on the motor right now and open it up a bit..
there is soo much that can be done

ok well i guess before i start that my exhaust is smoking it running a little rich. im just trying to go through it and see what i need to do. i have oil all over the lower block, could that be a head gasket gone? and if yes would that be the reason for the smoking. then other than that it seems to be running fine. oh yeah it had been sitting awhile before i picked it up. then once i get this done i think im gonna work on the mmotor and then the winter put a turbo on it. thanks alot appreciate the inputs and coments
 
tha a6 blocks are considered the strongest out of all the d series, i heard it because of some oil channels in the block or something, i dont know why but they sure take a beating!
 
the oil on the block is most likely a valve cover gasket/.
the exhaust might be bad rings..if you turbo,i recommend doing a rebuild on the motor, anymore questions feel free to ask
 
when i got mine with same motor and sitting for a year it smoked like your describing then after driving it for a week or so it got better and better til it stopped
