Whats wrong with my brakes?

When i push the pedal down it goes all the way down to the floor and doesnt seem to stop very fast, when it goes all the way down i can puh it harder and then it starts to engage more. Ive heard many things that could be wrong, ive heard i need to bleed the brakes, a new brake booster or a new master cylinder. What could it be?

try applying light pressure to the brake. does it slowly sink to the floor without seemingly engaging the brakes? sounds to me like a leaky brake master cylinder. the booster is probably fine. if you wanted to junkyard that part, it would be easier for you to not remove the booster from the firewall, and just swap the cylinder.

but, try bleeding the brakes. most inexpensive thing you can do... either way, best of luck!

Yep I had the same problem. Bleeding didn't solve it turned out to be the master cylinder leaking.

I'm having the same problem.. I don't know if this is related but does your ABS light come on? Mine does.

Good luck.

I had the same problem on my hatchback and after I bled the brakes, replaced the pads and rotors, which needed to be replaced anyways I tested her out. Well, unless I had a bit of room to stop, she still wouldn't. haha Sooooooooo, I replaced the master cylinder and VOILA! Master cylinder for the win. SWOOSH! She stops very well now. I also bought mine from...don't tell anyone....*whispers* eBay as Autozone wanted a little bit more than I could afford at the time. Let us know what ends up being the issue and best of luck.

do a line test on the master cylinder they way you do it is you put line clamps on ALL the brake lines going towards the calipers or wheel cylinders after doing that pump up the brakes till it gets hard and then start the car.put pressure on the brake pedal and if it starts going to the floor the master cylinder might have an internal leak which means its going to your brake booster,if the line teste fails replace the master cylinder as soon as possible and save up money for a booster because the chemicals thats are in brake fluid with eat up the rubber stuff thats in the booster.

Four months later, we would hope he got it fixed. Check the date on the threads...
