especially all this marvel crap they have been regurgitating as of late. I mean, spider man was a decent film, but it all went downhill from there. everything else has been unimpressive, yet still yields box office success. and now, they are on their way to make captain america and avengers. when will it end? lame ass mass market manufacturing of tired old concepts; the proven winners! when will somebody grow some balls and make something novel and interesting?

I only thought that Batman Begins and Iron Man were worthwhile. But they yield great numbers because everyone who grew up reading comic books will at least go see it.

Here's a concept, A movie about Tony Stark. No Iron Man at all. I think that would be entertaining.

Which movies are you talking about specifically? I wasn't a big fan of the Fantastic 4 movies or the last X-Men film, and Ghost Rider, Elektra, and Daredevil were pretty shitty, but most of the other stuff has been pretty good. Iron Man and the new Hulk are both good. And what's wrong with wanting to do Captain America and the Avengers? Captain America is supposed to be period piece set during World War 2. I'll wait until I see the movies to judge whether they're good or not.

Oh, and one more thing. I really enjoy what they're doing with the new Marvel movies, i.e. actually making them tie into each other rather then just have all these movies but act like the heroes from one one film don't exist in another...

They've already got an Iron Man sequel in the works, and they're going to explore some of the darker elements of the story (i.e. Tony Stark's alcoholism), and Terrance Howard (can't remember the character's name at the moment) will become War Machine like in the comic books...
 
to tell the truth, i saw iron man, and was not impressed at all. Everyone was saying it was so great and i thought it was mediocre at best. I liked the first spider man the most out of all the marvel films; it was rather novel (in the sense that superhero films were not too common at the time) and, imo, stuck to the comic book version pretty well. They butchered the first hulk film, and now i have no idea how they plan on reconciling the story with the second.

Really? You didn't like Iron Man?

I thought Iron Man was good. To me, it was a lot like the first Spider-Man, a good mix of humor, a little romance, and some good action. I don't know, maybe I need to go back and watch Spider-Man again. I also liked it because it presented a good origin story for the character and showed some character development (he ended the movie a different person then he started it).

That's the thing about taking these classic comic book characters that have been around for so long and translating them into modern movies, there's no way they can compress centuries worth of stuff into a two hour movie. To me, as long as they stay true to the character's personality from the comics, which I think they did with Tony Stark (i.e. playboy who doesn't give a shit about anyone but is empty on the inside to man with a mission), it doesn't matter if they compress the story down or attempt to modernize it a bit and change some minor details to fit the film medium better.

As for the Hulk, it's not a sequel to the 2003 version, it's a reboot. They know nobody liked that one, so they're pretty much ignoring it and starting fresh with this new one. I saw it and enjoyed it. It's much truer to the comic's origin story and general storyline, and also closer in tone to the old TV show rather then the 2003 movie (i.e. there's actually some humorous moments, it doesn't take itself super seriously, and Hulk actually destroys a bunch of shit rather then just running away the whole movie). Also, they actually have a real villain from the comics this time (the Abomination, plus they also set up another of Hulk's enemies for future installments) as opposed to the other movie where they had him fighting his father at the end.

I dunno, I like the movies, but you're entitled to your own opinion. I'm going to hold off on judging future installments until I actually see them though...
 
I thought Iron Man was one of the better comic book movies. It didnt go too overboard with the super power and CGI. Robert Downey Jr played Tony Stark very well IMO too! He was perfectly cast for that part :

Very good casting, and yeah, the CGI was used to good effect rather then just completely overdone like it is in a lot of films these days...
 
i have to say i was not looking forward to iron man; i couldn't see rdj playing that part - but i ended up stuck watching it one night and enjoyed it - so now i'm a fan. as long as they don't box-office the idea to death (what happened to spider man and a couple of the batman movies, in my opinion).
 
I like most of the Batmans, the X-Men movies where good, Iron Man was great and the Spider Man movies have been pretty good. The first Hulk sucked big time but I have not seen the newest one yet. I generally like the "comic book" films as long as they stay true to the actual comic book.
 
michael keaton and christian bale = the best batmen :D

That's exactly WHY I like Batman. He doesn't have magical powers so he has to rely on wits, strength, martial arts, cool gadgets and weapons, etc...

And yes, Christian Bale as Batman FTW!! Michael Keaton would be second, although I never thought he really looked the part of Bruce Wayne too well. Val Kilmer was alright, but the movie he was in was too goofy, and the Clooney one just sucked major ass!

What I want to know though, is how come none of the other Batman actors looked like they worked out for the role at all? Christian Bale actually is huge; all the other Batmans only looked big because they made the suits muscular looking...

ye, the batman film had more dept than all the marvel films combined. even if it didnt originate from a widely known comic, the film would still be great by itself.
