i just rebuilt my D15 b7 ( all stock ), i just need reliablity, anyways i finished the enging yesterday and went to fire it up , but it is hard to start, and it stalls out at idle, when i installed the cam , the cam gear looked like it was 1 tooth off, but i thought i could adjust the distributor ( like a chevy) and correct it , but as you all know the distributor is limited on how far it will turn , if i turn it foreward it will not start, but if i back it up all the way , it fires , but stalls out,

any help or advise would be appreciated alot, thanks i am new to the site and honda's:)

Fix the cam timing issue. Adjusting the distributor will only change the ignition timing, but won't do anything for the cam timing.

okay that is my plan of attack then, i will just give yall a lil info on the issue that started it all, It started with a burnt exhaust valve, so i took it to a " mechanic" or at least he claims to be, anyways i told him to just replace the valve ONLY, but he rebuil;t the entire head( well he had a machine shop do it) but he pulled it and installed the head, asoon as he fired it up it was smokin like cheech and chong!, so bad you could not even see behind you, then he says" I dunno what to do now??", i told him he was a jackoff, and that he blew the piston rings out, so i took it home , bought a repair manual for it and rebuilt it myself, i followed all the steps and instructions carefully, ( i used to rebuild small block chevys, fords, and dodges), so iam very mechanical, but never a honda. , i l;ove my honda, it is a good car, and i have got good use out of it, and i will never sell it,

so if you all have any other hints or tips , please let me know,
thanks much!

does this sound weird to you? i have not messed with the cam timing yet , but it will run while cold engine, but when it warms up it stalls? is that cam timing too?, seems weird, but i will adjust the cam today,, can you comment on this issue?

i build hi pro v8's new to rice burners, and no i am no shy to say i am a noob to honda's,
i used to eat up honda's in my 67 chevelle ss, but now thar gas is so expensive , i choose to drive honda,,, ask me any hi pro v8 question.....try me

A lot of the oldschool V8 guys that come here have a chip on their shoulder and even more newbies don't even bother buying a repair manual. I'll get to V8s some day when I want to make some serious all-motor power. Right now I'm having fun playing with sport compacts. :)

seriously i have no chip on my shoulder, i just asked a question to see if it was common in honda's... thats all... in a chevy you can be 2-6 degrees off on your cam timing, and just move the plug wires around on the cap and change the posistion of you #1 wire.... just wanted to know if honda was the same, and how touchy the cam timing was....and i have a manual......

but lets get somethin straight, i have no chip on my shoulder, but i dont like smartass comments....thats all ....,, i am a really cool guy... just here to make friends and learn about hondas

its cool man..... no worries...;)...., anyways,, so what kinda car you ride? obviously honda,, but what motor and mods?

hey i like your civic build, i looked at your thread, i like the cam, and the way you put it all together, have you boosted it yet?

I think he abandoned that project.

Oh and some V8 trivia for you, The big Buicks are known for oil starvation on what component(s)?

rod bearings, and lifters ....thats why guys add oil lines up top and drill out the block, and a hi volume oil pump is a MUST

trivia for you what is the leading cause of oil pressure loss in those engines, and what do the olds 350 and 455 have in common?

Shitty oil pump on the Buicks, same motor the 442 was just the higher end model, 4-four barrel carb, 4-four speed manual tranny, 2-dual exhaust.

but that still does not answer my question ,, what do the olds 350 and 455 have in common?

as for the 442 your right , but it was a 2 door too...

I haven't boosted it yet because I'm waiting on the right EG hatchback shell for the engine. The California smog Ref. wouldn't pass me because I had a P28-A03 ECU instead of a P28-A01. That and the front end damage just make it not worth my time anymore. I'll spend the money on an EG instead and not have to worry about going to the Ref..

hey queston for you,, how touchy is the cam timing in the d-15 b7?

It's pretty touchy. Every tooth is nine degrees and the only way to really adjust it is with an adjustable cam gear. It can be a bit of a pain in the ass to get the timing set correctly. If you end up with a bunch of slack on the belt closest to the front of the engine and tight on the back side, rotate backwards by 2-3 teeth, back to TDC, and then forward by 2-3 teeth. That should take up all of the slack and have you timed correctly.

wow 9 degrees!, olyy sheet mon! dude you just solved my timing issue, i knew i was off by 1 tooth,, i tried to half ass it with the cam gear, by lifting up the cam and slipping the belt on then bolting down the valve train,, ((cheating!!!)) , I AM SO USED TO CHEVY V8'S that is why i thought i could cheat,, but now i know why my car runs so rough,, does the crank pulley require a jaw puller to get it off? or a damper puller?, or just a screwdriver?,, i had all of the tools i ever needed in oregon, but i moved to florida, and left them behind at my X's house,, so i need to know which puller to buy?,,, harbor freight here i come!!!,, lol..

blanco thanks alot for your help
