My question is this: I'd like to grab the intercooler as well...but will it fit in the empty space left by my a/c condenser?

Does anybody know the dimensions for a '91 civic a/c condensor? The volvo intercooler is 29" x 17".


Would it be worthwhile to cut off bottom 1/2?

Help would be awesome. m(_ _)m
 
I have a 760 turbo wagon, and I can tell you the intercoolers are pretty big. I doubt it will fit right in that spot, but its worth a try. I dunno if the 740's had the same size intercooler, either. 29x17 is pretty big, though.
 
Now I'm getting the boost itch again. There's plenty of turbo'd cars in the local 'yard. Plenty of small turbos too. ;)
 
Don't cut it off- just get it and figure out a way to make it fit. You can do it!

I want to try to get it to fit, but I can't have it sticking up through the hood or hanging below radiator support. So, I may cut to fit & weld it closed.

Anything else I should grab off the volvo while I'm there? I can get the whole enchilada if I want, but I haven't checked to see if it spins or not.
 
I now have the turbo (& intercooler) from the volvo in the garage.
Can somebody make this easy for me & tell me where to look for an installation kit?

Ohhhh ok. Grab everything that you can- pretty much anything tied to the turbo or the fuel system. You can probably use more than you think! Injectors, piping, blow off or bypass valve, clamps etc.
 
I think I'll have to go back. All I took was the turbo & intercooler (which probably won't fit). Don't know why I didn't at least grab the blow-off valve. You don't really think I could use the injectors, do you?

I've been scouring the web for information & help. The first hurdle is going to be the manifold. Secondly, this is a water-cooled unit, so I need to plumb in water & oil lines in addition to the exhaust & intake pipes.

Whew. Hope I'm not in over my head here....
 
whoa whoa whoa why would you cut it? there are a ton of ways you could easily make that thing fit. and perform well for your setup as well. You could go the suby route and make it a top mount, you could mount it (if you have room) where the filter for the intake would normally go on the passenger side in front of the wheel well or you could relocate the battery to the trunk or mount it in front of the radiator and cut holes for the ic piping running back into the engine bay. Don't cut the intercooler. At that point you may as well not even run an intercooler. And yeah you can use the injectors. Think about it they were on the car with the turbo in the first place why couldn't they be used on a seperate turbo car? You could also try and find some dsm 450's and a blow off valve from one of those. Go the ultimate sleeper route do the intercooler behind the bumper and in front of the radiator and paint the intercooler flat black. reroute the blowoff valve into the intake. no one will even know your turbo'd unless you pop the hood.

The Volvo intercooler is huge. Way bigger than the air-box & battery combined.
I'm still going to try to cram it between the bumper & radiator, but it's going to take some creative mounting. I still think I could cut & weld it to fit in there.

If the injectors are there this weekend I'll look at them. I'm going back for the BOV & the charge piping.

Here's the rub. I was going to put the 'Rex up on blocks so I could take my time w/ all the repairs & upgrades I want/need to do. Meanwhile I could ride a bike to work....but some jackass stole my bike! I can't believe it.

I am so pissed. (>_<)

Use the water-lines from the throttle body, and a popular way to tap the oil supply is to add a T to the stock oil pressure sensor. Some people use an oil filter relocation kit, and run the turbo in-line, but that's a bad idea because hondas have higher oil pressure than the turbo is rated for.

Just make sure you use a line from the back of the block to the T that you mount the line to the turbo, and the oil pressure sensor. Don't put a T directly to the engine, then run the stock OPs on that. It's too much stress on the fitting, and you'll break it off. Some people like to run an oil cooler somewhere in their system with the addition of the turbo, others say it isn't needed. Take into account your climate, and how hard you drive.

Water is pretty easy. I'm going to tap the lines right from the head. I've already got everything bypassed (TB and IACV), so it'll be just a matter of running the lines.


On your turbo, you'll need the banjo bolts/nuts. Make sure you clean out the lines you got with the turbo before you mount it up. Ensure you're getting enough flow through the water-lines. The oil isn't too big of a deal, because you're going to need a restrictor anyway.
 
is it the intercooler in the picture above? it doesn't seem like it could be that big considering that looks like a side mount from the older nissans....but anyways if it is bigger than the battery and air box combined then there are still some ways to mount it you just have to be creative when you do it like you said. when you get it post up the dimensions.

Same dimensions as the pic, but inlet/oulet are mid-mounted instead of top mounted. 29"x17" Like a barn door. Think about the old volvo grill....about that big. (^o^)

I'm really looking forward to this. I still need to get back to the yar for BOV, piping & injectors. Then I'm slicing & dicing cheapo Bosal headers & down pipe to fit. Whee!
 
Thats a pretty big intercooler. I thought they were much smaller than that....hmmmm...well then it has to go in front of the rad then.
 
yup those volvo intercoolers are that big
dont waste your time with em- they all leak at 7 psi. totally worthless on anything other than a stock volvo

You have the blowoff valve. Its on the compressor housing for the turbo. Thats where the valve is on my 760 wagon as well.
