What do you think? should we drill it or not?

if you don't know what anwar is, go hit up cnn or something.

But all we will do with it is export it to some other country, I doubt that if it is tapped we will see any significant drop in gas prices.

Generally abbreviated ANWR, but pronounced "Anwahr"

Obviously, drill the fuck out of it. The more taxes Alaska collects on oil, the bigger my dividend check :p

If I were you I would go on a weekend trip, build a whale fat hut and some other shit on the site, then when they do decide to drill go to your dead whale palace and wait for them to tell you leave, then you tell them your ancestors have lived on for hundreds of years. Theyll have to cut you a big fat check for kicking you of your historical land, that or just kill you and leave you for the polar bears.

a friend of mine just moved down here from alaska and he said "Drill it till its dry. No one goes up there anyway"

Bandaid on a bullet wound. Nuff said. The answer to the problem of a LIMITED resource (non-renewable) is NOT sucking up more of it! Besides, how much of a relief would we really see? They have to pay for the work of finding and extracting the Texas Tea, which gets laid on us. That is, of course, after they have started extraction, which could take how long?

Seriously, the only thing this would do is thicken the back pockets of the oil industry. We, the consumer, would see no relief.

The ANWR solution is not a magic bullet. To make this work, lots of things need to change.

#1 - Homes have got to start being modified or built to suit their surroundings. There is no excuse for leaky homes in the North. All homes in hot areas should be build underground, or in a naturally cooler setting (when power is provided by fossil fuels)
#2 - People have to stop buying and driving these behemoth cars.
#3 - Using purchasing power, we all need to tell the automotive industry that we aren't going to play by their rules. They have the tech to build super efficient cars, and they cut costs to increase their profit margins. This is a whole other science that needs to be addressed (The auto unions, healthcare, manufacture, pay, etc)
#4 - People need to stop flooring their fucking car everytime they take off.
#5 - The oil companies are welcome to charge as much as they can get away with. But their business should also be evaluated not just on their low price of product: Service stations are dumps, gas stations are dangerous places, and the pumps are getting cheaper and cheaper. (A single fuel-line pump holds .7-1.3 gallons of old fuel in the filter and line. That means that when I fill up my bike, I get 20% of someone's crap gas for my premium dollar)
#6 - we need domestic sources of fuel. We are worried about the environment, but we're also worried about being poor. African nations don't drill, and they are beautiful. The people also eat each other. UAE has pipes running through most of it, and everyone drives a fucking McLaren to work. Choose.

Discover Magazine also came up with some images of possible futures.

Wind, Oil, Natural Gas, Coal and Wood.

You wouldn't like the Coal or Wood visions of the future. The Wind version is neat, putting HUGE animated wind turbines on the rooftops of cities. like, dotting the skyline with them. It's very neat, but NYC can't even keep a crane upright.

Ethanol has already done permanent damage. The soil can no longer hold or feed the nutrients to corn, and eatin' corn is so genetically modified it doesn't even resemble the CANDY I used to eat as a kid (Real farm corn before the 90s was awesome). Within 10 years Corn will no longer grow, or be so genetically mutated it won't be safe.

Biomass is neat, and renewable, and should be looked at as a dedicated trucking fuel . You can't run everything we have today on biomass. There simply isn't enough room on US Soil to grow it. It's molecular potency is shit though.

Geologically Montana should be approached with extreme caution. Montana is actually full of refinable crude - But tapping it disturbs ALL SORTS of shit across the US. From "Old Faithful" to the water tables in Texas to the San Andreas fault. Don't do that.

Yellowstone could erupt.

The easiest way to do this is make it "cool". When the HGTV and DIY networks start showing green improvements to homes as popular and cool, then you will see some change in that direction. Honestly, it's already started.

This is a problem that is rapidly starting to solve itself.

You and I know the BEST way to do this: used (~80's) cars.

#4 - People need to stop flooring their fucking car everytime they take off.
Again, a problem that will solve itself.

Look for the pumps with three hoses. Again, preaching to the choir.

The answer to loosening the grip of the OilCo's is to use what you have efficiently. Live close to work, own a fuel friendly ride, etc. etc. etc. you own a bike, you know this.

We need domestic RENEWABLE sources of fuel. Regardless of where it comes from, it does no good in the long run if there's a bottom to the barrel. What we really need is a direct drop-in replacement for gasoline. Ethanol isn't it, I don't know what is... but whoever finds it will turn us into the next OPEC, and then we can have our MacLarens :)

I'd pay good money to see the Saudis faces when we present a 100% viable replacement for gasoline at a fraction of the cost.

None of this liquid fuel will get us into space though. All we're doing is maintaining. I've had lots of jobs that put me in that category. I just work 8 strenuous hours a day to stay afloat. Getting out of it requires sacrifice (Staying late) or ingenuity (What ever the hell that is)

Getting around in cars is all well and good. Cars are fun. But think of how actually boring it is when compared to methods of transport of the future (independent flight). We have sources of energy out in space to be used with (almost) current technology - But we can't expect to get there with billions of gallons of rocket fuel. It's just not gonna happen.

One location comes to mind: Titan.

That's no moon... it's a gas station!

The trick to getting to getting anywhere else than the Moon is construction of craft in space along with more "exotic" forms of propulsion. Ion drives are nice... if you have the time to wait for it to get up to speed. Antimatter... that's the ticket, if we could produce more than a microgram per year.

It'll all pan out soon enough.

The company I work for is drilling in the Bakken play in western N.D. We also are in the Hanging Woman Basin in Northern Wyoming producing Coalbed Methane.

it needs to be a 2 front plan.

1) increasing oil production (hopefully domesticly)
2) find a vaible alternative to oil, and it's not corn based ethanol.

The article that B posted the other day is pretty interesting and has the potential to be huge if they are able to produce crude oil on a much larger scale and the crude is clean enough to be refined into gasoline. One thing the article didn't talk about was what kind of crude oil it produced. Like if its light and sweet or heavy and sour or some other mix.

What's funny is how our media controls our political process.

Ask Americans what they want done about oil, illegal immigration, taxes, and you'd think McCain was gonna landslide

then ask them who they're voting for and they say "ummmm, Obama!"
