Hi Kat, a good test is to turn your engine off and try and turn your steering, if the steering is easy to move you don't have power steering, if you ever had your engine cut out while driving ie. run out of fuel for instance, and you had power steering, you can hardly move the steering wheel.
There is a huge difference in feel at the steering wheel while stationary
Nerd talk----If a car has no power steering it is obviously mechanical,rack and pinion or worm and screw (old type) the gearing is lower so you can turn the wheel easier, ( without pump assistance)
But if the car has power steering you have to have the engine running to feed the steering pump, if the engine stops in a emergency !
you have only the steering wheel to pump the oil, which is differcult but possible,(saftety standards )
