New EPA mileage calculations

here's their story

EPA has changed the way it estimates MPG.
Starting in model year 2008, estimates will reflect the effects of
  • Faster Speeds & Acceleration
  • Air Conditioner Use
  • Colder Outside Temperatures
What else do I need to know about the new ratings?
  • The tests lower MPG estimates for most vehicles.
  • The actual mileage you get will still vary based on your driving habits, traffic conditions, and other factors.
  • All MPG estimates in Find-a-Car have been converted to the to the new ratings system to help consumers compare the MPG of older and newer cars.

uh, why? because fuel is loade with crap mtbe now?

Says because the tests are different now... On the new tests they accelerate faster and use higher speeds, run the AC, etc. Basically they account for the fact that people drive like douche bags. EDIT: Recked beat me to it. :)

Compare Old and New MPG Estimates

The 86 Civic HF only scores 46mpg without hybrid tech now. It still kicks the crap out of 99% of cars on the road. :)

i always thought the hf got 54mpg, and another thing i have noticed that gas dont go as far as it used to i think there watering it down like crazy

i honestly think there really is no set MPG..people drive differantly and most motors dont all burn the same,
basically uncalculable

The mileage estimates can be extremely off (averaging).

My 93 Integra I just sold has EPA estimates of:
Old = 28
New = 25

I was getting 37 mpg pretty consistently by driving conservatively.
So i'm sure there's some douchebag who thinks he has a race car getting 19mpg in the same car because he's beating on it everyday.

your more right than you know, only its not water... its ethanol...
ethanol is a shitty fuel... gives you less MPG... gives you less power... causes added wear to your engine
so less MPG right off the bat... thats pretty easy
but then less power, meaning you need to drive harder to get the same performance (or close to it)... the more you are on the pedal, the lower your MPG
and it doesnt have the lubricating properties that gasoline has, meaning it causes more wear and tear to your engine... reducing the life of your car

so if you dont think ethanol sucks ass already, think about the fact that the ethanol we use mainly comes from corn... that causes a reduced supply of corn available for market... that causes the cost of corn to rise... that causes the cost of feed to rise, that causes the cost of any product coming from anything that eats corn based feed to rise... chicken, eggs, beef, milk, cheese, pork, leather, wool, etc etc etc

there is generally 10% (or more) ethanol in most fuels sold around the US... with e85 (85% ethanol based fuels) gaining in popularity... guess what is going to happen to corn prices then... and you should be able to figure out the trickle down effect of that already (heres a hint $$$$$$$$$$$).... oh yeah... and the fact that you have to drive harder, using more fuel, means your car is belching out more pollutants per mile... thus completely negating the whole damn point of putting ethanol into the fuel in the first place

so while you are paying more money for gas that doesnt get you as far, to get to the store to buy products that cost more, in your car that isnt going to last as long... remember that ethanol is our savior from the evils of foreign fuels

damn, good read:cool:

look at the futures already for corn....

I wonder if they changed the highway speed from the "legal" 55 to the actual 85 that people do.
That's have a big change since 45% of the mileage is highway.

Haha. I love it when they modify the averages.

I've never gotten below 20mpg in my car, and that's even when I was going 130mph on the autobahn tuning the full throttle.

Yes, they modify the way they calculate the average economy, but it seems like it's biasing large engines. Look at how they test the cars now....

I call fuel scar BS, the old measurement of my car is perfect, the new one is low and I need a tune up as it is

:werd: Old measurement is below what i get for my crx si(granted i have a zc vs a d16 but still...)

i've got an accord with an H22, and even if i drive the piss out of my car, i still average 22.5

and :werd: when i beat the piss out of mine and drive hard for the whole tank, i still dont go below even the old measurement, usually get right about it.
