Hey guys, I have a 99 civic EX and i'm looking to swap out my D16Y8 for something with some more power. Now price really isn't a problem here for i'll save up the money for it, just need help on picking the best motor. Some friends have told me to get a B16A2 out of an SI and others have told me just to look for a type R out of an Integra. But i'm looking to go crate motor so if you guys can help me with a decision I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

~Never mind on the crate, was just told that Honda stopped producing B series motors

Well i'm just looking to make my car fast. The engine I have now doesn't even have VTec which is why I don't want to build it up.

the d16y8 is a vtec motor all ex civic have them, well if you like turbo you can turbo what you have and be faster than most b swapped civics

If that's the truth then something is wrong with my car lol. It says D16Y8 on it, does'nt say Vtec and I know the Vtec doesnt kick in cause my ex-girlfriends car had a VTec

Here are a couple pictures of my motor that I just took.

P.S it's a SOHC

yup that's a vtec motor not all of them will say vtec on the valve cover but if you look you can see the vtec solenoid and your not really gona feel it kick in on a sohc motor unless its built

Well one, i feel like an idiot lol and two.. what should I do in your opinion? Go out and buy a SI motor cause it is DOHC and build that up or should I just build up the one I got? My friend who has a Integra GSR who put a lot of money into it keeps telling me to just turbo my car and i'll be fine, but another friend who works as a mechanic tells me that most Honda Motors don't last more thatn 70k miles with a turbo.. lol i;m lost

Well as of right now my budget is going mostly into college to be a automotive tech but i'm trying to get a general dollar sign so I can start putting a plan into motion. As for power goals i'm not really sure being new to cars and all. Was into lifted trucks and stuff but gas is killing me, anyways I just want to be able to get up and go. I don't really want a 0-60 in 7 seconds lol but I dont want to run a 10 sec 1/4 mile either... just looking to be faster than stock

well let me put it like this any b series motor you put in there with your normal bolt ons will get walked by a 7psi turbo d16y8 and will cost about a grand less to do, if your motor is low miles and in good shape id just put a good name brand turbo kit on it that will be about 12-1500 bucks.

From what I know it's in good shape, and as for miles it only has 108k. Now for a turbo kit I was just looking at some and the cheapest I found was a Rev Hard, stage 2 for $2900

that one has a bigger turbo, and comes with more stuff. but your not gona want to go over about 200whp on a stock d series. also then link that i put up is for a 92-95 civic but they have them for yours at the same price.

W3RD.....

Since you're a noob to the whole engine building process, the D series would be alot cheaper to replace if you blow it up, and the practice from removing and installing the engine back in the car would be great practice for a real swap later on. My first in-depth motor build was a D16Z6. Long block, pistons, rods, gasket kit, rotary tool, head studs, bearings, everything I needed ( except tools ) to complete the build cost me a little over $1,200. Well, I still owe BLANCO the Butterfinger I promised him for the helpfull advice, so make that $1,201.29 ^_^

Stick with the D-series, atleast for now.

Alright, i'm going to just build this one up like you guys are saying. So what should I be putting on this thing? Cold Air Intake, Intercooler kit, header, exhaust.. anything else?

just get a good turbo kit and it will come with everything then go get yourself a good catback exhaust and call it done

Alright, thank you very much, you've been a huge help
