So I've been a passenger a few times but never a rider. I've been wanting to get into it for several years, and getting married in about a month I've got that feeling that if I don't start taking steps toward the goal I may never get around to it.

That said, I'm looking for something cheap, so that I'll only finance $1k at most. I have a car payment already, I don't need a bike payment also.

There's a 78 cx500 and a couple mid 80s Magna 700s for sale locally that I'm going to be calling on. Any opinions on these bikes? The cx500 looks really interesting, the laterally mounted Vtwin seems like it could be cumbersome.

Summary:
I am not looking for anything over $1500 to learn on. I don't want to shit up something with a significant monthly payment attached.

I am not looking for a sport bike of any kind. I'm a big guy, so not only would I look retarded as hell riding one, I find them extremely uncomfortable to be on.

That Magna is a sexy machine. It's also quite heavy - if you can ride it, then you can ride anything.

That said, Magna. The forks are very stable (Older hondas did fork wobble like whoa) and the seat is very comfy. When you get good enough at it, the Magna is also more friendly to your passenger.

Well, I also looked at a VTX 1300 at the dealer and had no problems handling the weight of it from the seat. The Magnas look much smaller, so I can't imagine it would be heavier than a VTX.

financing 1k is pretty stupid. just save for it.

As of right now, I don't have a lot going on that's building any credit. The idea was that a small personal loan as such would go alongside my car loan as a short-term credit boost.

I know what you're saying, but at your salary you have lost touch with reality. :p

....you are going to spend a grand on that?

Sweet god I love living in the middle of nowhere.

300 dollar cars and 100 dollar bikes.

BTW, both of the bikes listed are worth more in scrap metal than they are in great condition as a rider.

Your typical Magna here in CT is a $2000 bike. My GPZ is worth about $4000. That's private sale too.

Let's not get started on bike prices in Europe.

Financing if you don't have much credit is a good idea. Take a few months to pay it off (some say 4 months, others say the full loan term).

my GPZ is mint. I bought it for $600 and I was lucky. You don't see these machines anymore. They aren't getting more common.

I got my Shadow 500 for $500 dumped with bad fuel problem. Bike prices are higher here, I guess.

I picked up my Virago for $800...Private party sale, given it's condition, is easily $2500-$3000...<15000 original miles...

AGREED!!!ive been looking around for streetbikes(start while im young, and with a smaller bike) and they are all retarded priced
The Ninja 250 is PERFECT for you. And from a dealer, the markups aren't ridiculous. If you wanna take a ride someday, lemme know. I'll gos hopping with ya.

My girl wants a 250 Ninja so we can go riding next spring. She wants me to paint it pink for her...

The girl on that pink 250 must be, no joke, 3 feet tall. After getting used to the weight of a bike, say, after a season you'll be able to put a 250 on your shoulder and walk around with it. You build some muscle riding a bike.

I could be wrong, but I think the 250 has a 29 inch in seam. Being 6 feet tall I can flat foot any stop and my pant inseam still be 4 or 5 inches from the seat.
