I've got a '98 civic Ex...so what are the EG and EK designations?

Thanks!

Gotcha! Thanks!

The other thing I stumbled across was "Chassis Codes"

What is the significance of a chassis code and how would I use that info to my advantage?

Thanks again!

The "EG" and "EK" are the chassis codes. The two letters are followed by a number, and with those 3 digits, you can find out quite a bit about what a car is and how it was setup from the factory.

The EG8 is the USDM 92-95 Civic sedan.
The EG6 is the JDM 92-95 Civic SiR hatch.
AP1 = 2000-2003 S2000
AP2 = 2004+ S2000

Stuff like that.

What would be a "for instance" on what I would use that info for? I would need the info from the chassis code if I were doing (fill in the blank).

Thanks!

It's just a piece of information that's part of a Honda's VIN. You can use it to help identify a certain car, or to refer to a certain body style. I don't really understand what you're asking for here...

I'm not exactly sure what I'm asking either! :)

When would I find the chassis code valuable? For ordering parts? For checking engine swap possibilities?

If someone says "it's an EG8", that tells me....what?

Still clear as mud?

I'd like to point out that on here we really only use codes like EG, EK, DC, etc. Like it was pointed out before a 98 EX is actually an EJ. And while DC generally refers to a 3rd generation Integra, a 4-door is actually a DB. And a RSX is technically a DC5, even though an RSX is a fourth gen. Integra.

But to answer your question, a chassis code tells you exactly that. What model the car is, and what trim the car is. Example: DC2= DC tells you it is a 2 door, 3rd gen., Integra. And the 2 designates the trim. In this case, Type R.

They don't really have any other use besides just as a quick method of identifying various Honda vehicles. Very rarely would you use them when ordering parts. Most often it will just list something like "92-95 Civic EX coupe" or on order forms rather then using the chassis codes...

its all hard to take in at once like for example the 1992 body style civic as we know it started with that body style in japan in 1991 same goes for all there cars there all a year behind us

Not really- they just call their cars' model years by the year they were made, not the next year like we do. 1992 model year cars started selling in 1991 in the US- they're just called 92s. In Japan they would still be 91s.

Yeah, in europe it's the same way. By that logic, my car is a 99. The american registration says 2000 though...

Knowing that code can make it easier for you to find out things about your car. Also, some things that will fit one chassis wont fit on another chassis of the same year. For example, the headlights on a 93 civic sedan (EG8) wont fit on a 2 door civic of the same year (EJ2). If i'm wrong someone will correct me I'm sure.

You're wrong. :) The headlights are the same- the corner lenses (which are separate) are what's different.
