I have a '97 Civic CX Hatchback and I want to swap the engine, I was thinking swapping it to a B18b1, any suggestions?
 
ok whats ur budget? power goals? turbo down the road? mechanical experience? only if u want to do an h series swap cause its a bit different than any other d or b series.
 
be honest about your goals for the car , what will you use it for , drag , roadrace , auto x , whats your desired hp ? , will it be a daily driver . to many variable to offer any suggetions , with out knowing your true goals
 
My budget is a couple thousand, the car will be daily driven, not going to add a turbo down the road, and I want around 240hp

That is never going to happen without boosting it. Built turboed D would be the cheapest route that would get you close to that.

What are you talking about my D16Y7 could have 240+hp by adding an exhaust system, intake, intake manifold, flywheel and control module. I would add this but my engine is going to last another year or two plus D series engines can only handle up to 220hp so theres no point, so I mind as well do an engine swap.

You sir have no idea what you are talking about. There are D-series motors out there making 350+whp. If you turbo your motor (rebuild with the right parts) you could easily make 250. And no you cant get 240 from your motor with just bolt-ons.

Can the D series motors handle 350+whp, I bet you it wouldn't last long. Anyways then tell me what I can do to get a decent amount of hp without a turbo, since you know more than me

There are cheaper ways to get to 240hp. Easily done with a D.
 
High comp pistons, cam, insane amounts of head work, a good header, and ITBs wouldnt hurt, then the best tune ever, all that and you would be lucky to put down 200. I think your just a little confused, Honda measures their HP at the crank, so for example, you look up your motor, it says 125HP, thats at the crank, you lose an average of 15% of that through the driveline (tranny, axles, wheels/tires) And everyone says that a header and CAI and bolt-ons each give you between 5-15 more ponies each well thats not always true.
So how much hp can a D16Y7 handle

hah hah hah hah im sorry i shouldn't laugh. hell will freeze over before you make 240 hp on a non turbo d with only a couple grand in her.
 
as far as how much it can handle. iwith stock internals i wouldn't want to put more than 250whp out. if your want a decent daily driver i would get a b18b1. that is a pretty basic swap and has much more room for upgrades than any d series. and no seriously a dd 240hp d series motor would HAVE to be turbo'd
 
thats a really good question . for a true daily driver , that depends where you live . a 160hp civic in the snow can suck ass , but 250 in the sunny arizona can be just right . really dends on how much a drivers willing to put up and still call it a daily driver
 
meh you could pull off 200+ hp in the snow if you did an awd swap but then you probably wouldnt want to drive it in the snow ;p
 
Half of the people on this forum have no idea what a 250whp car feels like. Up until a few days ago, I didn't even know.

Then I went for a ride in my buddy's turbo'd LS-VTEC. Its only a t3, but it made 254 whp and 238 ft lbs of tq at the wheels. Man, it rips. I cannot imagine driving a 400 whp hatch on the street. His car is crazy. It hooks, pulls, and never stops. Fun little car.

Hell, even ~130 whp and decent gearing in my hatch was fun.

For what this guy is looking for, I'd say keep the D. Buy a Greddy kit, install it (if he has the mechanical know-how) and get a decent tune, ditch the e-manage shit.
