Well I've started to get into single track trail riding. For the past few years I've gone at Mohican state park here in Ohio and really enjoyed it. This past weekend I was there and decided to rent a real bike (Gary Fisher Marlin hardtail) to see how it was. I am honestly hooked now.

I am in the market now for a decent used bike to replace my POS 12 year old Giant. My budget is $500. I found this one locally: 2007 Gary Fisher Marlin and am going to look at it immediately after this post.

Anyone here have any experience in the sport? I really liked the feel of the Fisher I rented, and I think this one might fit the bill. Any suggestions?

Ive only played in mountain biking, but rode BMX solid for about 4 years. Have you looked at any thing besides Gary Fisher bikes? What about suspension? Are you set on a hard tail, or are you split between full suspension and hard tail? When I started to leave the scene hard tails were pretty exclusive to street riding. If your riding cross country Id suggest something with a lite weight air shock, and if your goin for big air or down hill Id go with a spring/shock setup. Its definitly a great sport to get into, and if you can manage to stay on your bike its fairly easy on your body, while giving you a good workout.

i rode hardcore from 1992-1998. did a couple xcountry races, and have done downhill and dual slalomn at mt snow and killington.

then, i got a car. lol

that looks like a decent bike for the price. gary fisher used to work for trek. he left and sarted his own line.

I ride an Iron Horse Warrior Disc, I really like the feel of it, the only problem I had with it was I bent the shit out of the stock wheels.

There is a really cool place out in Wooster called Vultures Knob.

Did you have a dedicated DH setup or did you use your XC bike? If you had a DH setup, what was it? I always wanted to build a DH bike but never got to it. :(

i basically made my xc bike more downhill friendly, and rode it on both

i have (still in my shed) a 1994 GT Zaskar. full XT/XTR, judy XC fork, gofast downhill bar, mavic ceramic wheels, the whole 9... i had a lot of money in that thing. and i still love that frame... it's seen probably 30k miles... i rode every day all day for years. but everything on it at this point needs to be replaced.
i'm better off just buying a new one.

Its so funny to see how things have progressed, that bike was probably the cream of the crop in its time. And now its out-dated I like it though.

yup. there was one hardtail model higher... the zaskar LE which was the same bike, but with a Ti frame instead of 6061-t6 alum.
i think i paid 1800 for it in 1994.... and that was with a mag 21. i snapped that soon after and got the judy (another 500 bucks)

still light as fuck though. as pictured, it weighs 24 lbs :)

i'm looking around lately, and i can't touch that weight for the same price

Well I picked it up for $250. Thats a steal considering it was $700 new and has hundreds more in upgrades.

I talked the guy down because a front spoke is broken on it. Shouldn't be too tough to fix.

Funny story though, as soon as I got it home it took it in the house to show it off to my roommate. I then rode it out the front door and attempted to ride it down three stairs off my front porch. I say attempted because I was leaning too far forward and flew over the handle bars cutting myself up pretty good. Hopefully that isn't going to spell bad news on the bike in the future.

I have got a 2005 Specialized Hardrock Sport. I havnt had a chance to ride it to much lately. It isnt the greatest bike out there but it gets the job done. I may start riding to work here pretty soon. 11 miles with a few steep ass hills may end up kicking my ass though....

wear a helmet.

it's just like on a motorcycle. your head hititng the pavement sucks at 5 mph just as bad as it does at 60mph.

Lol, that shit always sux, but I bet you never make that mistake again.

Even though I never got into the style, XC seems like it would be the most fun. You get a good mix in your work out, you spend a lil time powerin up hills, you spend a lil time huckin the bike around trees as you rip down hills, and you get to relax a lil bit in the slow areas. Lol.

I ride a Giant STP. Hopefully in the next few months, I can get a new bike. I love the one I have now, but it's pretty limited to street/trail riding and sucks when having to climb any hills. Preferably I want to get a fixie road bike first, but when I get another mtb it's probably going to be a Kona Stinky or something similar.

I dig the STP's, super fun to ride cuz they dont tire me out, and theyve got a more low and laid back feel like a BMX bike.

Has anyone looked at Norco's new line of bikes? Their DH bikes are top notch, but they have a pretty full lineup of XC, BMX, and standard mountain bikes too.
