Why in the hell does everything have to be so DEEP!

This is just a rant so dont read too much into what Im saying. I went to see a show tonight and the band was really good. I have seen them a few times and I really like them. So any way its 3:46 in the am and my GF and her brother are now arguing about how DEEP and interesting everything in the music industry is. Why cant people just enjoy music? The only thing people talk about is how f-ing DEEP the lyrics are, and how important they have been though out music history. Its just music and I am sorry, but who cares what the "lead singer" has to say. Cant bands just play good music without the "DEEP" aspect. Fuck a lead singer let the people who practice day in and day out to learn how to play an instrument to its full potential have their credit. The guitar player and the bassist and the drummer give the song its heart and soul anyway. Why do the lyrics always get the credit, they are just another instrument any way. Music should make you feel good. And just to throw it out there Jam Bands blow ass and Good music should not be assimilated by the "jam band circuit". The jam band circuit is what I think off as purgatory for real musicians. Any way sorry for the rant, but trying to have an educated discussion with them is like talking to my dog, I love em but they just cant understand what I am saying.

I know what your saying. I like death metal, I could care less about the lead singer growilng about raping satans goats or whatever. I just like the intrumental aspect of any type of music.

Wow I couldn't agree with you more, lyrics are only important to a certain extent. Some songs are deep, others are just worded a certain way to keep the music flowing.

Hi guys. Stop being so pissy, just listen to the music, if you want to get deep into stuff go lay out in the front yard and look at the stars, then proceed to talk about the possibility of other life and how big the solar system is and how we came to be. Music is just music leave it at that.

Art can be all things to all people. If they get the "deepness" out of lyrics, then let it be - If you like the beat (Like any common 8 year old :) ) then you're not any less or super less right than they.

As Zoidberg says "At least I'm meeting new people!"

There are tons of songs out there where the lyrics are deep, and are meant to be that way. Some songs are just meant to be fun.

First of all there is no need for the 8 year old comment. The most complex music, like classical and many types of jazz, have no lyrics. So if you need lyrics to spoon feed you the intended emotion of a song then by all means listen away. Second I agree that some songs have deep lyrics and meanings, but most of the time they dont. Third I am talking about the people who read into your average, everyday songs looking for some meaning that is not there or not intended to be there.

Its not intended to be like I said it is just a rant. And yes I have been in front of many crowds, and I do understand what a real lyricist goes through to create their art.

Music Theory and Music Appreciation. Take them then come back and talk to me about what music is "supposed" to be. ;)

muthafuckin :werd:

I agree with everything Blanco said, music isn't there just to be there, and its not wrong to just like the beat, but don't go bashing on the singer because he actually put lyrics in a song. Thats the beauty of it, the lyrics, like Blanco said, being able to take them into your own perspective and getting what YOU get out of them, not what everyone else does.

I certainly didnt mean to offend all musicians. I was simply stating my opinion. I think you missed my point however. I said that the rest of the band should get credit for creating the music. People give credit to the lead singer not the rest of the band, and in most cases I think bands could do without the singer. Also the thread is more about my gf and her brother annoying me with their conversation. My statement about the lead singer was harsh and I apologize, but once again it is my opinion. Just so you know I have taken both of the classes you suggested and I still feel the same way. I havent sang in front of an audience, but I have performed spoken word, and been in many plays so I do know what is like to let it all out and get emotional on stage. And I dont think I ever claimed to know what music is "supposed" to be. Sorry for pissing you off.

IMO, plays and spoken word is much different than singing in front of an audience. I've done plays and such but I could never do singing....especially if they were my own lyrics. Karaokes are fine though. :D

Whether something is deep, or who should get credit, is all opinion. Who really cares what other people think? Also, there are a lot of bands that get credit; it's just usually your "popular" bands that they usually put the spotlight on the lead singer more.

I don't understand how you bash lyrics and praise the instruments in one sentence, then you turn around bash "jam bands" which is just instruments jamming out together

takes a lot more talent to "jam" than it does to play rehearsed music over and over

There was a lot of things being argued about that night and I didnt go into detail in my rant. Sorry for posting a thread without giving more details as to why I was ranting. I was just getting my frustration out.

The qualifier in this whole thing is the TYPE of music and the role that lyricism plays. In the majority of music (pop, jazz, blues), the vocals act as primary instrument, contributing heavily to the essence and structure of the song. In death metal/metal, the vocals are more of an accenture, contributing to the overall feel of the song.

Also, people often mistake metaphorical lyrics for deep lyrics. Take for instance, Dave Matthews. Now, I'm not one of those people that will just refer to the band as Dave, but I do like the music. It sounds good to me, memories, etc. But the majority of their songs are about sex, drugs, or both. "Crash, into me, and I come (cum) into you...hope you wrapped it up, Dave.

When I read the title to this thread I thought you were going to bitch about all the threads in here that deal with girls and guys bitching about girls and all the deep theories about relationships. That would have made much more sense to me.
