Sorry for my inexperience w/ honda's guy's, but I need to know what my options are for my gf's car. She has a 95 civic dx w/ a d15b7 and an auto trans. The head is screwed. I found oil on the top of 2 of the spark plugs and had very low compression on 2 cylinders. I dont' know how many miles are on the bottom end and weither or not it has been overheated. I have the equipment/ knowledge to do a full engine replacement, but really dont have alot of time. What engines would be a direct swap over using the existing transmission? Or am I better off just crossing my fingers and do the head swap?

Just do the same swap. You can probably pick one up on Craigslist or at a junk yard for a couple hundred bucks. Then all you have to do is yank the old motor, drop the new one, and hook it all up.

Any 88-00 would work as long as you swap over the sensors and OBD equipment; but I believe it's technically illegal to swap in an older generation motor...so any 92-00 should work.

are there any other motors that work with the auto trans from a d15b7?

92-00 D-series engines are the only thing that will bolt on to that transmission. If you're thinking of a B16 or B18, nope, sorry, won't work.

Also, if you go with a VTEC engine, then you'll also need a VTEC ECU...
