Now, my question is this. I realize that Escort and such are high-quality detectors, but my girlfriend's dad has a simple Cobra from Sears that they got him for fathers day. Will a simple Cobra detector work fine, as long as I get a mounting bracket, that I need to get regardless of which detector I get? I don't see any point in spending $300+ if a simple $50 will work just as well, with a bracket. I'd like one, because unfortunately my bike likes to speed.

Any opinions?

P.S.
My dog just chewed the fuck out of my old helmet windscreen.

I'd rather go with no detector then a cheaper one.
I went from a cobra to an 8500, no way could I go back.

I also don't ride with my detector, if I get caught I just pull over. however, most of the time they don't even bother to try and pull me over (knock on wood)

Your on a bike, if you see the lights drop a gear and get on it, but like jeffie said most of the time they wont even chase you.

the absolute no one detector company is Beltronics. They bought valentine a few years back , and now have the best detectors period. Nobody is even a close second. The way the game works is that the detector companies sell the police the equipment that is a little behind their latest products. once your detector is 4-5 years old, you are now behind and must update your radar. Beltronics.com will let you send it your old detector and upgrade to a new one. If you are going to consistently speed, you are better off with the best. Maryland police use the best stuff, and they sit and wait for you before they turn it on, really giving you very little to work with. The Beltronics detectors will detect signals off other vehicles and will help with this. Do your research, but you get what you pay for.

The obvious question in Virginia, DC and Conneticut: radar detectors are illegal. Well, they are legal to own, illegal to operate in these 3 states. But they are constituionally legal. So, what would you rather get.....a $50 ticket for using a radar detector with no points on your license, or a speeding ticket with points....???

I've already got 5 on my license, which is the main reason this question is coming up.

Well, most cops are using laser these days. And if you get hit with laser, its already over. But, on a motorcycle, as I noted coming back from phoenix, the cops don't even try. I passed more than 20 of them on my way from AZ to TX, all at over 100mph, and not a single one even flashed me.

So much for the "keep up with traffic" thing. Guess it didn't take you long to get used to the handling/feel of the bike.

ZOMG, the bike called me a pussy over and over. It made me do it.

There was a warning light on the dash that flashed "You're a fucking pussy" any time I dropped below 100.

Ride a GSXR1000..... its 160 or bust.... seriously the bike HATES YOU for driving out of the power band, but driving in the power band in anything less than 4th you will snap your neck in half.

I saw a Repsol tonight in Point Pleasant, just thought I would rub it in... I'm just kidding, you scare me too much for me to joke like that. I did see one though. Ugly orange and all.

wtf are you talking about? most liter bikes make power EVERYWHERE.

It makes power, but it also has a power band. And from what I remember its something ridiculously high speed for every gear. 1st is almost to 70 or 80 before it REALLY starts pulling.

I could have typed all of your responses : It's all the exact expected words from you.

That said, most of this is flat out wrong :) I would like to know if anyone who claims that one system is better than another actually owns that system. V1s are good only because of their mounting options - That will make any radar detector good. Luckily, mounting on a tall bike will allow for a wider FOV for the unit, so you'll see it go off more often than it would in a car. It's going to work better for you.

This is prolly a good place to start: I looked here a few months ago and found a 2" round Cobra unit that seemed to work well. I can't confirm this page now because I'm on my mac and my mac sucks long donkey dick.

When the weather gets below 60, I can easily spin the rear tire up with pretty light throttle at around 5K rpm in first gear. Yes it makes more power up top, but no way does the bike show any signs of not being happy if its not in the power band.

a 600 makes very little power below 10K rpm, a 1000 makes more power at 5K rpm then a 600 does at 14K rpm

=)

As far as detectors goes, I've noticed the same thing over and over again, everyone and their mother hypes the V1, its a great detector, but it in the same class as the 8500/9500.

Is it much better? hardly, I believe one covers K and KA band a bit better then the other but the other one covers laser better.

Those are the exact reason I want your bike, but in all black or all white..... it makes me wet.
