Honda Noob
I just bought a 93 Honda civic Del Sol SI. It didn't come with an audio system, so I've decided to go all out and get a kick ass sound setup. Anyone know any good audio setups i could use for this car? How much is it going to cost me to get a really good one with everything included. I'm a big noob when it comes to this so i have no idea. Im looking to spend anywhere from 500-750 maybe.

grats on the honda, and no offense but $750 won't get you a 'big' system. figure you spend at least $300 on a decent head unit, an amp would be another $300 unless you skimp, and you haven't even gotten to speakers or a sub yet.

for your budget you listed, i'd focus on getting a decent head unit that you have done some research on and feel will fit your needs (need to hook up an ipod? play mp3 discs? satellite radio ready?) and pair it up with some lower budget econo speakers and then start saving for each additional component (amp, sub, better speakers, good speaker cable).

good luck.

Thanks, Honda's are awesome. Well i was wrong about it not having a radio in it. It apparently does and has a nice aftermarket head. I think i just need an amp and some kick ass speakers. I want speakers that have great bass lows and satellites that have awesome highs. what do ya think i can get for about 750? Im thinking 2 10's or 2 12's would be good for bass, but that will most likely send me over my 750 limit haha. what do ya think

I got hooked up at best buy since I had a friend working there, but I got a JVC head unit with plenty of preamp outs, including one just for the sub, HD radio, and bluetooth for 100, plus a philips 12" with 4 year full warranty for 80, a ginormous box with a plexiglas front for 40, and a two channel rockford fosgate for 90. Now I didn't put new speakers in, but the sub, head and miscellaneous parts put me well under 500. Granted it's not infinity or something, but I'd say the system sounds good. Make sure you check out crutchfield.com. they usually have some pretty good deals, and lots of reviews and support, and they'll make sure you get EVERYTHING you need so you don't have to come back later getting little stupid connectors or adapters to make shit work.

you can find a good headunit for 250 or so. pioneer, sony or alpine make decent units for a budget. they offer high end stuff also but obvoiusly its costs alot more.

$250-$300 will get you a good powerful used amp. Fosgate,jl and many others can be found online or privately sold for cheap. JL 500/1 usually sells for 300 bucks used or online new.

10 inch subs are plenty for that little car. 2 JLw3's or 1 boston G-5 sub. 1 12'' is plenty as well.

have fun!

Most headunits play mp3's and wma's now weather you want them too, and a lot of them are satellite ready. If they don't have a specific "ipod" hookup, make sure it has an auxiliary input in the rear and make your own. Check with some local custom shops and see if they have any deals. I have a setup that cost me a measely $300, for a very nice Power Bass Box, 2 power bass 10's, and a 600 watt power bass amp. Is it loud enough for my taste? Yes. Fortunately, I opted for the rout of using my stock radio, and that saved me some cash, even though I had one from the rex laying around. Anyway, it was 300. It's loud enough to make my head hurt, and looks nice. Is it anything compared to the 2 kicker vr comp 12's I had with the 2400 watt xtant amp I had? No. Are they comparable to P3's? No. Are they a huge bang for their buck? Yeah.

i am a die hard fan of kicker solobaric L7s. i have had many many different subs through the years and i like the kickers for the money. a single 10" L7 in a well designed ported box with 500-600rms watts will hit harder than you need in that little del sol.

if you are on a tight budget, you can always pick up some gently used stuff. just make sure you test it before you buy it.

i just picked up a virtually brand new solobaric L7 for $60 off this kid from craigslist.

Go alpine. Best bang for your buck, real quality stuff for not stupid prices. Get a basic cd player, components for the front, 3 ways for the rear, and a single 12" sub. But, to save some money, get a jensen, pioneer, or sony amp. Alpine's amps are usually very high. Check out ebay for new stuff at a heavy discount. I did a very nice sounding system as described above for something like $900. You can't beat a full setup with crossovers, components, 3 ways, head unit, sub and amps for $900. It can certainly be done.

Alpine Type-R
Kicker L7
JL-W7
Boston G-5
are all really good subs,,so far i think the g-5 hit the clearest and the w7 was the deepest.
the type-r is just bang-bang loud..
but all paired with a nice wattage amp will give you the boom

no one ever mentions Bazooka base tubes anymore. Dollar for dollar it's still the best deal you can get. 10 inch 200 watt powered tube goes for about $200 on ebay. Are they the best money can buy, no, but for 200 bucks you get a powered 200 watt sub.

Wow. Bazooka. I haven't heard that name in forever.

We were just talking about those the other day, actually. Didn't know they still had them around. I thought those became extinct with the dinosaurs.

try ebay. bazooka tube BTA10200 just search for that number

i bought a pioneer head unit, 25w x4 with remote, and aux input for 25$ at goodwill.
its a very good unit, i love it.
and i bought a 400w powerbass amp for 130.
and when i bought that i got two sets of tweeters with built in crossovers for free.
put those in, with some extra door speakers.
so on my doors i have a pair of 5 inches, 3 1/2 inches and tweeters running off the amp from the head and i used the amp to run the rear speakers, and i bought a 12 with an amp built into the box from a thrift store for 25$
and i spent 37 on the wiring kit.

it turned out great.

oh and the rear speakers are bose and the door speakers are infitiy and global.
