I was hoping to grab a cheap pc on the last wootoff, but no success. I have a cheap laptop that works just fine, but I want to have something in my room to store all of my music, and not have my laptop hd maxed out with music/video. Next year I plan to build a full on workstation type computer for 3DS Max, Maya, CAD, etc. since I will be needing it then. Right now I basically need web browsing, word processing, storage, that sort of stuff.

I found a refurb HP on frys.com for 350 and was considering it, but decided to see what it would cost to build the same thing on newegg, and this si what I came up with. Itsa a little more expensive, but its also all new and the parts have warranties, so it's ok.

btw heres the frys.com comp I ws looking at.

imma be frank, that is a little less than ideal. the processor is decent and so is the ram. the case is cheap and craptastic and not worth the $40 plus $15.99 shipping. the board uses a shitty as chipset and even shitter igp. the power supply should be fine and so are te fans.

do you have a frys around you?? they have a e7200 with a shitty ecs board and a really nice antec solo case for $130 after rebate. the board again uses that crappy 945 chipset but its basically free and easily overclock the e7200 with the 333mhz fsb BIOS change. the processor sells for 120 alone and the case is usually around 60-70. so definately a steal.

if not, let me know and ill see if i can piece something from newegg that would better.

Yea, I suck at picking mobo's. Honestly, I have an idea of what the n. bridge/s. bridge do but don't know shit about picking them.

I used to have a Fry's local to me but now the closest is over an hour away, so i'd spend more in gas than shipping from newegg.

As far as the case, I already have one of these and I like it. It's a nice size case, looks good, is cheap, and has the ext. 3.5" that I want for the card reader. It also has a space for a front 120mm fan, and aside from the side air duct, it has a side vent that I can put another fan on. The only other case that I liked was the Antec 300, but it lacked the external 3.5 bays.

If you know of a good combo deal on newegg, let me know, but I didn't find much for the lower end stuff. From doing some reading around, this processor should also be easy to overclock to 3+ ghz.

what about this mobo? or this one?

that board should be fine. however, if you could, i would spend the extra money on a board based on the intel g35/g45 series. those are second best to amd 780g/gx series for micro-atx with onboard video. ive read that the asus boards based on the intel g35/g45 are beasty overclockers.

but, id like to suggest, why not amd? yeah intels are much faster, but seeing as you need basic computer needs now, id pick up a cheap amd be-2400 for $30 and a good 780g board for $80 or so and have a killer setup for a htpc. those boards have onboard hdmi and all the goodies, perfect for a media center. seeing as you'll get an intel cruncher later anyway.

intel made boards usually dont overclock so well. mostly known for stability. anyway, here is a killer combo that i just stumbled upon:
Newegg.com - Intel Pentium E2180 Allendale 2.0GHz 1MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops

its an e2180 with the xfx board for $90 after rebate. the processor is a tad slower, but the board has hdmi and supports 1333mhz fsb. most likely, you can drop the processor in there and change the fsb from 800 to either 1066 or 1333mhz. not a gurantee though. or put in another $50 to get a E7200 @ 2.53ghz, which would tear apart any dual core AMD has and has been overclocked to 4.0ghz on better boards.

Lastly, word is the antec earthwatts 380watts power supply will be avaliable from newegg for $30 shipped starting tuesday morning until 6pm.

OR you can get the OCZ 600watt modular power supply with 2X2GB DDR2800 RAM for $140- $55 rebate for $85, which is a pretty good deal too.

another question, I'm getting two sata dvd-rw drives and 2 sata hard drives, so don't I need to look for a psu that has at least 4 sata power plugs?

just reading the comments on that e2180, people are sayig they are oc'ing it. I plan on doing it a bit, but plan on sticking to air cooling so that will limit how much

most modern psus that is 24pin atx has 2 sets of sata power adapters with 2 plugs on them. even then, most motherboards come with molex to sata plugs which works perfectly fine. just make sure nothing elses is on hard drive chain except hard drives.

So it looks like that xfx motherboard wont let you change the voltage. At what point would that become a problem? could I still oc it a little without worrying about that?

so heres what id get:
Intel E2180 + XFX Geforce 7150 board = $119.98 ($30 rebate)
OCZ 600watt PSU + 2X2GB OCZ RAM = $139.98 ($55 rebate)

Total = $259.96 + 7.75% tax = $278.81
Grand Total After Rebates = $193.81 shipped.

From past experience, the only bad thing is OCZ rebates need to mailed within 14days instead of the normal 30 days. But they are very very good at processing and honoring it. You can go to their forums and they will make it right. Great customer service. You can throw in the E7200 and make it around $250 after rebate. That will be a killer starter rig.

And since nvidia is desparately trying to get rid of backstock you can get a very good gaming card for around $35 after $50 rebate:
Newegg.com - EVGA 384-P3-N966-TR GeForce 9600 GSO 384MB 192-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

its all sold out but may comeback and there is a coupon code that goes with that. its equal to an old 8800gts (G80) which was the second fastest card avaliable 2 years ago and can play all recent game titles at a good frame rate minus crysis. nothing plays crisis at a good framerate minus 3way sli gtx280s.

Alright, well I'm going to look at the things you just posted and see how that makes this all cheaper. Here's the shopping cart so far. It got pricey, but I needed a monitor, keyboard, all that stuff, and the little other things start to add up too.

Like I said, I'm gonna check out the other deals you talked about. I've been reading and reading reviews trying to sift through the bullshit ones and figure otu what will be good for me, and the only reason I pick this stuff is because they all have solid reviews, although I'm more than open to other stuff.

DONT GET THE 9500GT. Its basically an old 8600GTS renamed. Either look at an older Ati 3850, Nvidia 8800GS0/9600GSO, 9600GT or 8800GT. Ive seen them all around $70-80 or less after rebate and those will absolutely run circles around the 9500GT. BTW, those are listed from slowest to fastest card and each being around 5-10% faster than the previous selection.

That antec power supply is a horrible deal. Much better deals. Hell even the NeoHE is a considereably better deal. but if youre gonna pay that price, get a corsair unit.

So thanks for pointing out that psu+ram combo. I already had that ram picked out, and just switched to that psu, saved me $70.

As far as the cpu/mobo, the e2200/msi g31 board combo comes out to $129.99, and the combo you pointed out is $119.99. You know anything about the xfx boards? from the reviews I felt a little reluctant to get it. I actually had selected that board, but switched after reading the reviews.

honestly, not really. but man, if you get a graphics card, ditch the micro-atx boards and get a full sized one. look at either the p35 or p45 boards. will allow a much finer tuning and higher overclock those any of the boards mentioned.

-Asus
-Gigabyte
-MSI
-Biostar Tforce

are all great series of boards.

theyre pretty much the same board, but the pro has these advantages over the SE:
-8 vs 6 SATA
-onboard firewire (never used mine once in 3 years)
-3 vs 2 pci-express x1 slot (never used mine either, but more devices are starting use it more)
-2 vs 1 pci-express x16 slot (2 will allow crossfire)

SE vs Pro:
-16gb vs 8gb
-3 pci vs 2 pci slots (not express.)

The difference between the two is 8 dollars after tax and shipping and rebates. So you decide if the pro is worth it over the se.

and as for the 8600gt, thats fine if youre not gonna game much. but again an extra 20 dollars or so will buy you a lot more extra frame rates and higher resolutions. so its up to you to see if its worth an extra 20 or so.

I couldn't find an 8800, am i just blind or something? I don't game at all. I will probably pick up another 22" monitor in a couple months though, but about the most load the graphics card will see is if I end up finding the time to get on 3ds max to play around, or stuff like sketchup.

I noticed that these boards don't say pci-e 2.0, so they are just the regular pci-e?

The difference between the two is 8 dollars after tax and shipping and rebates. So you decide if the pro is worth it over the se.
good point, I didn't notice that

it looks like the jump to the 8800 is gonna be a little too much. I really don't think I need it. I've always dealt with just the onboard video on all my computers, so I'm sure the 8600 is going to be more than enough for what I need right now. now later on, I'm eyeing something like this :D or anything thats decent and on the Autodesk list of supported cards

It all comes out to $1006 shipped w/ $140 in rebates. If I take away the monitor and the extra stuff that the original HP that I was looking at didn't have (extra dvd drive, extra hard drive, graphics card) it is right at $550. This is cheaper than any new lower end computer that I could find online thats not a pile of crap celeron or something like that. The cheapest Dell I could build about the same was over $600, and that was the closest one i could find. Does this sounds like too much $$? This is my first time buying all of the stuff at once to build a comp, so it seems like it's a lot for a basic computer.
